Atlas Mountains
Wonderful mountain scenery, traditional Berber villages and a host of relaxing or more energetic activities are on offer.
Only a three-hour flight from the UK, but a world away culturally. An itinerary created around a long weekend could see you immersed in luxury hotel stays, bustling markets and, of course, the views from the Atlas Mountains.
Just three hours flying time away, Morocco is the nearest country to the UK that can offer a true glimpse of the exotic. With several daily flights direct to Marrakech with ‘no frills’ airlines, a holiday to Morocco has never been easier or cheaper.
Perfect for either a long weekend of pampered luxury or a more extended holiday exploring Roman ruins or sampling the hospitality of isolated Berber villages. Morocco is one of our favourite destinations.
For a taste of the exotic, luxurious indulgence, incredible cuisine, amazing shopping opportunities, ancient ruins and beautiful scenery, all a short flight away.
So near to Europe and yet so undeniably Arab, Morocco cannot be classified in one easy sentence. The bustle of the souqs, the clack of backgammon in the coffee houses, the water sellers, overloaded donkeys and isolated Berber villages set high in the valleys of the Atlas Mountains are all essentially North African.
Marrakech, with its charming old quarter, street entertainers and bustling market stalls, is the starting point of most holidays to Morocco. Driving in Morocco is easy and car hire is a perfect way to explore other areas. These should include Fez, the best example of a medieval medina in North Africa, or the small fishing port of Essaouira with its whitewashed walls and turquoise shutters. For the more energetic, there is good trekking to be had in the Atlas Mountains, where the Berber villages are a reminder of a simpler lifestyle.

Morocco is generally safe to travel around, although women travellers may find they are hassled more than men. Keep an eye on your possessions when in crowded places and leave valuables at home.
Some of the best food in Morocco is found at street stalls, not the restaurants. Eating at busy stalls with the locals is your best bet. Avoid quiet, empty places where food has not been freshly prepared in front of you.
Entering the Souks is like walking into an Aladdin’s Cave. Leather goods, kilims, handmade pottery and intricate metalwork adorn the floors, walls and ceilings with mountains of exotic spices scenting the air. Bargaining is also part of the fun and expected by most stallholders. For a more authentic and less touristy experience be brave and venture deeper into the souk where there are fewer shops and more local craftsmen working on their wares.
