Essaouira and The Atlantic Coast
The Atlantic coast adds a whole new dimension to a holiday to Morocco.
Combined with the culture and colour of Marrakech, the jagged peaks and mountain villages of the Atlas or the rolling sand dunes of the Sahara, a visit to this wild and windswept coast peppered with whitewashed towns and villages makes a wonderful addition to any trip.
Perfect if you want to soak up the sunshine, do some walking, cycling, windsurfing or horse riding.
Essaouira
Essaouira is a Mediterranean-style fishing port and is located just a few hours west of Marrakech. This delightful fishing port has a wide sandy bay of crashing Atlantic waves and an intriguing network of dusty whitewashed houses, shuttered blue with a myriad of narrow alleyways and secret doorways which occasionally open out into the hustle and bustle of a tiny square.
South of Essaouira is Agadir. Although not to everyone’s taste this busy port does offer a pleasant base for a few days of sun, with sheltered beaches and a spacious seaside promenade that comes to life in the evenings.
Oualidia
Further north along the coast lies Oualidia, a seaside town set on a picturesque lagoon. Popular with the locals the bay here is famous in food circles for its oyster beds.
