Ruins of the Basilica, Morocco

Fez, Volubilis and Meknes

The imperial city of Fez has a different feel to Marrakech. With its whitewashed city walls and surrounding landscape of olive groves, it feels more akin to Southern Spain than North Africa.

With a UNESCO World Heritage Medina and with the ancient site of Volubilis plus the imperial cities of Meknes and Rabat nearby it shouldn’t be overlooked.

About Fez, Volubilis & Meknes

Fez, the capital of Morocco for more than 400 years, has the best-preserved medina in North Africa and the tiny winding alleyways, barely wide enough for a donkey, create interest and excitement at every turn. One of Islam’s greatest cities, it is also one of Morocco’s gems and should not be missed. Remaining almost totally unspoilt, the Heart of Fez is the old city, a maze of alleyways which take you back into the past along with the magnificent palaces of the Fez el-Bali where you see the Royal Palace, the Mellah, the tanneries and souqs.

Whilst here also make time to visit Meknes via the Roman ruins at Volubilis.

Kate Hitchen

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way. In fact, I am never happier than when I’m cycling, trekking or simply eating my way through a country! My heart and head regularly pull me east, notably to India but I may also be found wandering through the galleries and piazzas of Italy or daydreaming about fresh ceviche in the far west.

The excitement of travelling the world has always hugely appealed. Largely cemented from my first solo trip to Egypt and the Middle East. The crazy hustle and bustle of Cairo was a huge assault on the senses, scrambling through the claustrophobic tunnels of the Great pyramid took me out of my comfort zone and I was left humbled by the warm hospitality of the Nubian people in Aswan as we shared dinner together.
