Historical

We travel to understand, to break down barriers and change our perceptions. History tells us so much about a destination and its peoples – it gives context and a sense of perspective.

History gives us deeper insight. History also acts as a poignant reminder whether the battlefields of South Africa or of Kohima in Nagaland, north-east India.

Historical buildings, sites and places often speak for themselves. However, our guides supplement and embroider their rich past with historical anecdotes and stories. Anyone can list a litany of facts and figures but only the very best storytellers can bring history alive and grant it that human element to really make it resonate with you.

Classic sites

While we like to take the path less travelled at Steppes, a first-time visit to any country will need to include the iconic ‘must-sees’ – the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu for example. Let Steppes take care of your holiday and you’ll see these famous cultural sites from a different perspective – watch the sunrise over the Taj Mahal from the banks of the Yamuna river with a private breakfast picnic, see Angkor from above by helicopter or take the alternative Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Paul Craven

Being from a family with Army connections I can from an early age remember travelling. From camping in Europe and then later being sent to boarding school when we lived in Germany at the age of eight, complete with shorts, long socks, a cap and my suitcase. In appearance not too dissimilar to the children evacuated to the countryside during the blitz. Later, my father’s postings took us to Nepal where we had to transit Delhi and Kathmandu where we were sometimes stranded for days and Hong Kong from where I travelled in 1983 through China for two months.

The excitement of travelling the world has always hugely appealed. Largely cemented from my first solo trip to Egypt and the Middle East. The crazy hustle and bustle of Cairo was a huge assault on the senses, scrambling through the claustrophobic tunnels of the Great pyramid took me out of my comfort zone and I was left humbled by the warm hospitality of the Nubian people in Aswan as we shared dinner together.

Having travelled to different parts of the world over the years it never ceases to amaze me how you constantly learn and evolve from the adventures you experience. I adore working in an environment where I can share my passion for the world and discuss fascinating stories both from my experiences and that of our clients. In the past year I’ve delved into the wintery beauty of St Petersburg, trekked through the colourful desert in Jordan and sailed down the iconic Nile in Egypt.
