Draa Valley, Southern Morocco

Southern Morocco

A visit to Southern Morocco will take you into the heart of the Berber peoples land and some of the country’s most dramatic landscapes.

The north and the south of Morocco are separated by the Atlas Mountains. Whereas in the north you will find the whitewashed Imperial city of Fez and landscapes of olive trees and rolling countryside, as you progress southwards across the snow-capped mountains the scenery changes from cedar forests to dusty pink Berber villages, palmeraies, imposing Kasbahs and the beginning of the Sahara.

Escape the crowds

Located in southern Morocco are the oasis towns of Ouarzazate and Skoura, both of which offer a nice base from which to explore the area including Todra gorge and the Draa and Dades Valleys.

Also, Taroudant often referred to as the Marrakech of 50 years ago, this traditional Berber market town offers a much less visited and more laid back option than some of the other cities. With its majestic gold, pink and orange-tinted circuit of high walls, Taroudant is half citadel and half oasis.

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.
