Singapore skyline at the Marina during twilight

Tranquil, traditional and innovative – Singapore is a masthead for what South East Asia now represents. It’s one of the few places in the world where modern architecture and plentiful green spaces blend so beautifully.

Most of our Asia team have been to Singapore and have sampled the good and the bad of what this vibrant city has to offer. Be clear as to what you are after and they will deliver ideas and inspiration.

Why we like Singapore

Every now and again there is a sheer delight in arriving somewhere which is spotlessly clean, where everything works and where the service, food and accommodation is simply impeccable. Such is Singapore. It can be used as a gateway to the East, as a stop-over en-route to Australasia or for rest and pampering after a journey through less perfect lands. What is there not to like?

What to expect on your Singapore holiday

The former British trading post and colony has carved a unique niche for itself over the past couple of centuries, nowadays offering a vivid combination of ultra-modern skyscrapers, remnants of tropical rainforest, ambitious tourist developments, occasional reminders of the colonial era and an assortment of colourful ethnic urban areas such as Little India, each with a character very much of its own.

Above all, however, it is spotlessly clean (chewing gum is banned!) but despite its rather sanitised reputation Singapore is anything but dull. The visitor is spoilt for choice when it comes to things to see and do: it boasts museums and river tours, plentiful green spaces, a vibrant nightlife, a rich cultural mix, and a whole planet’s worth of culinary experiences.

Paul Craven

Paul is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Central Asia and the Silk Route.

Being from a family with Army connections I can from an early age remember travelling. From camping in Europe and then later being sent to boarding school when we lived in Germany at the age of eight, complete with shorts, long socks, a cap and my suitcase. In appearance not too dissimilar to the children evacuated to the countryside during the blitz.
