Whoever came up with the notion that the journey matters more than the destination clearly never flew economy in the back row of the aircraft, next to the toilets. But as far as road trips are concerned, the notion could not be more opposite. The journey is an integral part of the experience and at Steppes Travel, we’ve come up with a list of 4×4 road trips that even the team of Top Gear would be hard-pressed to ignore.
Whilst this may sound like a contradiction, a guided self-drive is an innovative concept that allows for stress-free 4×4 exploration of the world’s most wild places.
Join a group of like-minded travellers to drive in convoy across terrains like the Andes in Peru, uncharted Costa Rica, the south shore of Issyk Kul in Kyrgyzstan, or the Haa Valley in Bhutan. At the front of your convoy will be an experienced driver-guide, leading the way but still giving you the freedom to travel at your own speed. Our clients have found the skill and knowledge of our local driver-guides to be the key to unlocking routes they would never have found by themselves.
We will, of course, put together an itinerary for you but don’t expect it to be cut and dried. We’ll make sure you have a robust and reliable vehicle perfectly suited to the terrain and find you the best accommodation – family-run, characterful and perfect for relaxing after a day’s exploring. We’ll provide you with a picnic hamper for lunch. We’ll even make recommendations as to where you may want to stop enroute. But these are just recommendations – you can park up wherever the mood takes you. After all, you’re in the driving seat and so it’s up to you to discover your own memorable moments.

Almost every great trip I’ve taken has been defined by the people I met along the way. After years of exploring the Caribbean and Central America, I’ve learned that being open to conversation and interaction leads to a far deeper understanding of a place than any guidebook could ever impart. My love for Asia began with living there. Based in Vietnam and then Malaysia, I also explored the surrounding regions before eventually finding my way back home via China and the Trans-Siberian railway.
