What to expect on your Mauritius holiday

Contrary to some expectations, Mauritius is not a lone island, but part of the Mascarene Islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Measuring some 30 x 40 miles with a central plateau that rises to a height of 700m, much of the island is covered in lush vegetation with exotic flowers, butterflies and birds. The 93 miles of sandy coast and lagoons are protected by the world’s third-largest coral reef offering superb diving opportunities.

The diversity of the local population has resulted in a myriad of cultures and festivals which will appeal to those looking for days away from the beach. The wonderfully friendly local people stem from India, Madagascar, East Africa, China, France and England, producing a rich mix of cultures and lifestyles.

Illona Cross

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management.
