Togo

Small enough to escape notice but large enough to merit exploring, Togo is more than just palm-fringed beaches.

Its interior hides rugged mountains, fertile savannah and shimmering lakes. Amidst this varied terrain, Voodoo, Christianity and Islam blend together, merging with ancient traditions to form an exciting and diverse cultural landscape. From fire dances and phallic mud castles to ritual scarification and love potions, Togo hides many secrets.

Togo is a new destination for us, and one which presents a number of challenges. Therefore, we are not currently offering tailor-made trips. However, we have set up a pioneering group tour, exploring the country in the company of one of our team members.

A little more about Togo

Squeezed between Ghana and Benin, Togo borders a small stretch of the Gulf of Guinea. Its relaxed capital, Lome, is flanked by beautiful golden beaches that face the gulf’s warm equatorial waters. Behind, the lagoon of Lake Togo supports a rich array of birdlife, before the lowland forests and savannah plains begin.

The country becomes wilder and less densely populated as you travel north, with the rugged Atakora Mountains interrupting the central region, before rolling savannah returns in the far north. It is here that a handful of larger animals – such as antelopes and buffalos – survive, notionally protected within national parks.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.
