Great Journeys

Great journeys provide us with curiosity, challenge and contrast that few other trips can. They are often based around history – for example, retracing the footsteps of an explorer – but can be themed on atmosphere, nostalgia or a sense of achievement.

Travel by car, by 4×4, or by train, following some of the worlds greatest scenic journeys. For those of you with the time, you can travel its length in one go, but most will prefer to do it in sections stopping along the way to explore the many sites of interest.

True romantics or explorers amongst you might want to arrange a ‘great journey’ yourselves but don’t underestimate the time it takes and the difficulty of sewing the disparate threads of such a journey together. Our experts and contacts can arrange opportunities that are simply not available to independent travellers. More to the point they are here to help as back up, should things not go to plan – always a possibility on a long and involved journey.

Self-Drive journeys

Designed to give you the freedom to dictate your own pace, these holidays combine classic self-drive destinations such as South Africa, Namibia and Australia with countries like Morocco, Malaysia and Argentina, where self-drive may not be the first option that springs to mind.

Put yourself back in the driving seat and take the road less travelled on a Steppes self-drive holiday.

Rail journeys

Whether it’s a Great Railway journey of epic proportions or a short hop in a rural setting, sometimes the journey itself becomes the destination. Jump on-board, feel like a traveller rather than a tourist and let the landscape speed by.

There can be no better way than immersing yourself into a country and meet the local people than to take to the trains. Our favourite rail destinations include Canada, Australia, Sri Lanka and Japan.

James Armitage

Rewind to 1981 (yes a long time ago) where, as a young and naive gringo ready to explore the world, I boarded a plane to Santiago, Chile. My Spanish was limited to “dos cerveza por favour”, but I was eager to discover a new continent and meet new friends – an adventure that has since become a nearly 40-year love affair.

Jackie Devereux

I was born in Zimbabwe. With a dad who was in the police force, we moved from place to place. I have always been passionate about travel. My grandparents mentioned that our ancestors set off from the Horn of Africa – Ethiopia – looking for better cattle pastures. They ended up settling in the south-eastern hills of Zimbabwe, in the Great Zimbabwe area.

Paul Craven

Paul is the Conde Nast Traveler chosen Specialist for Central Asia and the Silk Route.

Being from a family with Army connections I can from an early age remember travelling. From camping in Europe and then later being sent to boarding school when we lived in Germany at the age of eight, complete with shorts, long socks, a cap and my suitcase. In appearance not too dissimilar to the children evacuated to the countryside during the blitz. Later, my father’s postings took us to Nepal where we had to transit Delhi and Kathmandu where we were sometimes stranded for days and Hong Kong from where I travelled in 1983 through China for two months.
