Explore Longyearbyen

Begin the journey in Longyearbyen, a small mining town and the administrative centre for the Svalbard archipelago. With just one main street where locals get around by skidoos, it is fun but a slow-paced place. In the evening, see how the bars liven up with off duty miners and visiting tourists alike.

  • Unusual

Basecamp Isfjord Radio is situated on the outermost part of the Isfjord on the beautiful Nordenskiöld coast framed by the majestic Svalbard mountains overlooking the open sea. The radio station has charming and cosy rooms, a lounge with a fireplace and a unique and extremely interesting history. Until a few years ago, the radio station was an important connection for telecommunication between mainland Norway and Svalbard.

  • Spitsbergen

The Trappers Lodge is in the middle of Longyearbyen and is furnished with driftwood from a Russian settlement to give the feeling of a Spitsbergen hunter’s cottage. Breakfast is served around a long table in The Travellers Club, while the Cognac Attic, with its glass ceiling, is flooded with arctic light. The lodge is bed and breakfast only, but the town is home to a selection of restaurants ranging from coffee houses serving Italian dishes to gourmet meals at a Huseta.

Sue knew how important it was to me to spot polar bears and did everything she could to ensure we had the best chances possible. We were even lucky enough to see Arctic foxes and walruses.
