The North
Visit the charming colonial towns with small and welcoming communities.
El Salvador – also known as ‘the half-an-hour country’. Spend a little more time than that here with Steppes Travel and you’ll meet towering volcanoes and spirited colonial cities (and, very few tourists).
Nestled on the Pacific Coast between Guatemala and Honduras, El Salvador is the smallest of Central American countries and roughly the size of Wales. While it might be principally remembered for its harrowing civil war in the 1980s, today it is becoming an unusual and rewarding country to visit with well-maintained roads, beautiful volcanic scenery and the onset of some excellent properties.
Our classic combination of the “half-an-hour country” El Salvador and neighbouring Honduras unveils the highlights of these often overlooked nations. From dining with an archaeologist to trail hiking Mayan islands, we can curate a fully-tailored trip bursting with extraordinary experiences.
El Salvador is known as the pais de la media hora – the half-an-hour country – as everything is close. You can spend the morning enjoying the flora and fauna of El Imposible and have a shrimp ceviche on the beach for lunch. Best of all, you will only encounter a handful of tourists. El Salvador combines well with Honduras and is an interesting extension to a trip to Central America.
With its rapidly growing economy, concerted efforts are being made to expand the tourism industry within El Salvador, but the delayed approach allows visitors the luxury of enjoying towering volcanoes, pristine forests, delightful colonial cities and expansive beaches without the crowds. Coffee has been the principal export since the mid 19th century and traditional haciendas still dot the countryside.
