Argentina – Conquer nature’s superstructures

Imagine traversing a glacier stretching three miles wide, towering 70 metres above the waterline, with another 170 metres hidden beneath the surface. Perito Moreno Glacier is a colossal superstructure. Don your crampons and trek a small section of this vast glacier. Navigate jagged peaks, as eerie creaks and groans of the slowly advancing ice fill the air. Finish with a whiskey, served over chunks of glacial ice, each piece thousands of years old. A fitting end to an unforgettable adventure.

Blue Patagonia

Explore Patagonia by the sea, where the coast is a National Park and part of ‘Blue Patagonia’ UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Swim in one of the many natural rock pools formed along the coastline or jump aboard a small vessel and sail around Malaspina Cove to find sea lions or to visit Penguin Island to see its colonies of Magellans. Stay at the renowned Bahia Bustamante before moving onto the Valdes peninsula, assigned by UNESCO as a site of global significance for the conservation of marine mammals. Valdes was made famous by the BBC’s natural history footage of Orcas predating seals from nurseries on the beach.

I held on tightly and at times closed my eyes as my horse galloped across the pampas.  I trusted the gaucho and surrendered to the feeling of being out of control and it was totally worth it!

Crampon Walking the Perito Moreno Glacier

The western base of the Perito Moreno Glacier is where I equipped myself with crampons ready to walk across a tiny section of this vast glacier. From here it looked like a smooth wall of ice, with the edges meeting the water with a completely vertical face, but on top of the glacier you can see jagged peaks and bottomless crevices with an astonishing shade of deep sapphire blue.
