An ever-present union of Indian, Spanish and Carib influences pervades this Central American favourite. Copan, unquestionably one of the most beautiful of the Mayan remains, is something every trip should revolve around.
Honduras’s interior of the country is divided by a striking central mountain range that is cut by fast flowing rivers, giving way to lowland plains and fertile valleys that are cultivated with banana and tobacco plantations.
The population is a mix of Indian, Spanish and Carib, which ensures for an even more eclectic blend of culture, religion and cuisine.
Why we like Honduras
Largely because it has still not succumbed to the westernisation which is slowly but surely creeping into all the countries of Central America. Its somewhat turbulent past of Mayan conflicts, pirates, Spanish colonialism, military rulers and even a football war are long gone and travel to Honduras will reveal beautiful beaches, superb snorkelling, a relaxed view of life and the outstanding remains of Copan, arguably the finest Mayan site in Central America.
Honduras: What to Expect
Honduras has some beautiful national parks, in particular, Bonito with its rainforest, rivers and waterfalls. Take a boat trip in Punta Sal and kayak through the mangroves of Punta Izopo. There are some fine palm-fringed beaches along the coast such as at Tela but it is offshore, at the Bay of Islands, that is the real surprise. The calm crystal clear waters and one of the finest coral reefs in the region make the Bay Islands superb for diving and snorkelling.
