Expert-Led Groups

We are recognised as one of the UK’s leading specialists in cultural, archaeological, wildlife and pioneering, expert-led small group holidays.

We have been running insightful and groundbreaking group tours since our inception in 1989. We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International,  the Orangutan Foundation,  and the Jane Goodall Institute.

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

Steppes group tour travellers are like-minded people – interesting, interested and curious. Our group tours aim to create an easy and informal atmosphere – we have a lot of fun on our tours and many friendships have been formed

Cultural Group Tours

Our tours explore areas of the world which have often gone unnoticed. Accompanied by experts in their field, they embrace the intriguing ancient history, rich cultural and religious influence, or architectural wonders. Learn and discover the traditions of these countries, whilst rubbing shoulders with the locals, become emerged with the whole community.

They present a fascinating combination for the first-time visitor and provide a deeper insight to those returning to the area.

Wildlife Group Tours

Seeing wildlife in its natural habitat is an inspiring and uplifting experience. It is a privilege. By joining forces with conservation agencies, researchers and local conservation projects – whether on an Indian tiger safari or a Borneo Orangutan tour – we are not only able to support conservation and local communities worldwide but also deliver exceptional wildlife holidays.

Our wildlife group tours have been receiving plaudits now for more than 15 years, from both our clients and conservation partners alike.

Pioneering Group Tours

Roll up your sleeves and be prepared to take the rough with the smooth as things will likely go awry at some point: Journey times may take longer than expected and accommodation may not live up to the beautiful pictures on the website.

There will undoubtedly be hiccups and glitches along the way but these will make for an even more rewarding and pioneering adventure.

As a child I read voraciously so the seed of travel was planted by none other than Enid Blyton. Family holidays ran the gamut from icy dips in the early summer seas of Cornwall, to camel rides in north Africa, from Times Square to Tenerife. A GAP year upon leaving school cemented the travel bug. After graduating University and before stumbling, happily, into a career in the travel industry I spent a couple of glorious years exploring southern and east Africa, large swathes of South-east Asia, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Being from a family with Army connections I can from an early age remember travelling. From camping in Europe and then later being sent to boarding school when we lived in Germany at the age of eight, complete with shorts, long socks, a cap and my suitcase. In appearance not too dissimilar to the children evacuated to the countryside during the blitz. Later, my father’s postings took us to Nepal where we had to transit Delhi and Kathmandu where we were sometimes stranded for days and Hong Kong from where I travelled in 1983 through China for two months.

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management. My desire to see more led me to work as a guide for AndBeyond, first in South Africa, then in Tanzania as the company expanded. Here, I lived and worked in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro, guiding and running safari camps.

My love affair with travel began in a vintage Italian train carriage at sunset on a hot and sticky September evening in 1983. Sardined into a two-bench compartment, I’d spent five hours sharing sweaty thighs, broken-Italian pleasantries and furtive glances while rattling towards Turin, stopping at every wisteria-draped village along the way.
