The Flame Towers, Baku, Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan

A perfect ingredient for a multi-country tour through the area. Make sure you add the petroglyphs of Gobustan – rock art dating back to the 10th millennium BC – to your tailor-made itinerary.

Once a relatively insignificant region of the Caucasus Mountains, Azerbaijan has emerged as one of the world’s foremost oil-producing nations.

Taking in the magnificent Caucasus Mountains to the north, the lush green valleys of the south and large swathes of arid semi-desert in between, Azerbaijan is a beautiful country with superb scenery, although it remains virtually unknown to the average traveller.

Why we like Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan in itself is probably too small to warrant a holiday on its own; however, it combines well with Georgia and Armenia, or for a longer journey, take the ferry across the Caspian to Turkmenistan. It is a fascinating country with an excellent choice of hotels and one which never fails to surprise.

What to expect on your Azerbaijan holiday

Baku, the capital, lies on the shores of the Caspian Sea and has transformed itself into a glittering city of glamorous hotels and interesting museums. Nearby, the Absheron Peninsula is covered in oil wells, but a visit will also reveal a much older link to the Zoroastrians, for whom fire is an important symbol and who have erected temples around burning natural gas vents in the ground.

The Beauty of Armenia and Georgia

The bordering countries of Armenia and Georgia are easily combined to create a fascinating trip. Full of ancient temples and hillside monasteries, soaring mountains, picturesque wine regions and incredibly friendly people this relatively unknown part of the world makes for a truly fascinating holiday.

Joe Parkes

As a child I read voraciously so the seed of travel was planted by none other than Enid Blyton. Family holidays ran the gamut from icy dips in the early summer seas of Cornwall, to camel rides in north Africa, from Times Square to Tenerife. A GAP year upon leaving school cemented the travel bug. After graduating University and before stumbling, happily, into a career in the travel industry I spent a couple of glorious years exploring southern and east Africa, large swathes of South-east Asia, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Having travelled to different parts of the world over the years it never ceases to amaze me how you constantly learn and evolve from the adventures you experience. I adore working in an environment where I can share my passion for the world and discuss fascinating stories both from my experiences and that of our clients. In the past year I’ve delved into the wintery beauty of St Petersburg, trekked through the colourful desert in Jordan and sailed down the iconic Nile in Egypt.

Don’t think I’ve ever had a guide with two undergraduate degrees, one Masters, studying for a PhD in Greek inscriptions in Georgia! She is excellent.

Internet access is relatively widespread in Azerbaijan, with Baku particularly well connected. Furthermore, government censorship is fairly limited, so most sites can be visited without restrictions. However, access in smaller towns and villages can still be difficult to obtain, with speeds remaining slow.

Azerbaijan is a safe destination with low levels of crime, although the risks are slightly greater in Baku. In the city, we recommend leaving valuables behind and not walking alone at night.

There are certain areas of Azerbaijan, including the Armenian enclave of Nagorno, Karabakh and regions close to the border with Armenia, that are not safe for tourists. This is due to ongoing tensions between the two countries, following a six year-long war that ended with a ceasefire in 1994. However, away from this these areas, the dangers are non-existent.

Can I use my mobile phone?

Coverage is generally good in Azerbaijan and the country’s mobile network is relatively modern. However, as with many places, coverage is less reliable in remote areas.
