Tanzania - Classic Crater and Serengeti Safari

A relaxed safari exploring two of Tanzania's greatest natural wonders

12 days

from £5,795pp (excluding flights)

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are on many a bucket list. In the right seasons they offer some of the best wildlife viewing in the world with breathtaking vistas to match. This archetypal safari holiday offers time spent in each location to ensure a taste of the exceptional.

  • View rhino in the largest complete caldera in the world
  • Meet the famous Ngorongoro male lion coalitions
  • Stay in luxury under canvas on the Serengeti plains
  • Safaris will be guided by some of Tanzania's best qualified guides

Leave London in the evening and be in camp the following day, in time for late lunch on the veranda, overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater. The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge has luxurious rooms with phenomenal views  and will be home for 3 nights, giving ample time to relax, read and dream, in between safaris. Daily excursions into the crater will be unrushed affairs, in spacious 4x4 vehicles and escorted by professional, expert guides througout. It is only on the floor of the crater that one can fully appreciate the enormity of Ngorongoro Crater, which makes the most dramatic backdrop for Africa's most iconic wildlife.

The Serengeti is not far from Ngorongoro and the sense of luxury is not lost as tented camps are located on the plains to evoke a true feeling of wilderness. Again the daily explorations to see wildlife offer insight into some of the oldest ecosystems on earth and the experience is heightened by lazy afternoons on daybeds whist watching birds flit about the camp. Afternoon sundowner drives with far reaching views and ice-cooled G&Ts are highlights of a Serengeti safari while late night fire watching accompanied by the nocturnal sounds of the bush make for the perfect end to the perfect day.

Day 2

Drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your guide will collect you from your hotel and together you will travel to Tarangire national park. The drive to the park gates will take about 2 hours depending on the road conditions. The rest of the way to camp will be through the park, game viewing along the way.

This region is dominated by the massive Ngorongoro crater, which has formed the focal point of so many television documentaries. The crater floor is alive with game, particularly around Lake Magadi, which is also well known for its flamingo population. Aside from herds of zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest, the crater is home to the 'big five' - rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo.

You will be staying at Lemala Ngorongoro, Full board

Day 3

Visit the Crater floor
Today you head to the Ngorongoro Crater and admire the abundant wildlife in one of Africa's most remarkable locations. Photographic opportunities are plentiful, with animals often seen against the spectacular backdrop of the caldera's sheer cliff face.

The crater floor itself is alive with game, particularly around Lake Magadi, which is also well known for its flamingo population.

Aside from herds of zebra, gazelle and wildebeest, the crater is home to the big five of rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. It also plays host to almost every individual species of wildlife in East Africa, with an estimated 25,000 animals within the crater. Elsewhere on the crater floor, predators roam freely, terrorising the vulnerable plains game that huddle in groups as the dusk settles.

The views from the rim are spectacular and the fever tree forest, which characterises the area, is alive with elephant, leopard and buffalo, most of which descend into the crater to feed.

You will be staying at Lemala Ngorongoro, Full board

Day 4

Drive from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti

Leave Ngorongoro and travel to the Serengeti, which is around four hours away.

This is the setting for one of the greatest wildlife shows on earth, the famous Great Migration of wildebeest - a life and death dash beset on all sides by the Serengeti's many predators and undoubtedly a 'wildlife wonder of the world'.

You will be staying at Lemala Ewanjan, Full board

Day 5

Game Drives in the Central Serengeti
Explore this wonderful landscape, in the company of an expert guide. Drive across the plains of the central Serengeti, dotted with kopjes, venturing into the quieter hilly areas, in search of more elusive game. Leave camp twice a day, setting out on morning and afternoon game drives. Finish with sundowners as dusk settles on the Serengeti.

Antelopes, zebras and gazelles fill this rich grassland landscape, providing the area's many predators with an abundance of prey. Watch large prides of lions stalk herds of wary Thompson's gazelles, see a leopard drag a fresh kill into the branches of sturdy acacia trees or admire a courting pair of cheetahs surveying the landscape from the vantage point of a termite mound.

Day 8

Lemala Game Activities in Northern Serengeti
Over the next few days you can explore the fantastic northern Serengeti, an immense remote wilderness, almost double the size of the Masai Mara. Here you can enjoy fabulous landscapes and terrific off-road game viewing with practically no crowds.
Resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high with prides of lion up to 30 strong but when the migration starts arriving from June onwards, the area turns into a wildlife paradise par excellence.

Through June, July and August the wildebeest continue moving through the area, crossing and re-crossing the Mara River before heading north towards Masai Mara, but several large herds remain behind and weather changes could easily bring the vast herds flooding back into the area from the Mara.
Migration and predator action lasts up to the end of October assuring this area's reputation as one of the finest in Africa. At the camp's superb location, Lemala guests will be amongst the vast herds of migrating wildebeest and zebra. Two of the largest crossing points on the river are nearby and occasionally guests may observe the exciting crossings from the comfort of the camp. The spectacular Lamai triangle, Wogakuria kopjes and Kogatende airstrip are all easily accessible.
The guides here have exceptional local knowledge, enabling them to take you to where the action is in open 4x4 vehicles, on or off the road and away from the crowds.

You will be staying at Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge, Full board

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
