Frozen river, Forest, Yukon, Canada

To head into the remote Yukon wilderness to watch grizzly bears ice fishing in the rich salmon waters is a rare and privileged experience. It is also an exceptional photographic opportunity few have the occasion to capture.

Larger than California but with just a fraction of the population, the Yukon slices between Alaska and Canada and is known for its untamed raw wilderness.

Drive along the unpaved Dempster Highway, regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the world, with spectacular seasonal colours and views across the expansive tundra landscape. Watch as grizzly bears plunge for salmon, ice fishing in the glacial waters of the remote Yukon rivers, and experience one of nature’s greatest displays — the bright lights of the Aurora Borealis.

Scout for Wildlife

Wildlife is prolific in this northern territory – vast herds of caribou, grizzly bears and wolves roam the wildlands, making this an exciting driving destination with well-maintained scenic roads. Famous for its gold rush history, this influence can be seen throughout the territory with many of the towns originating from the prospectors who travelled here in search of the gold that was settled in the many rivers.

Bear Cave Mountain Adventures Camp £££££

  • Canada
  • Safari and Wildlife Lodge
  • Wilderness

The Bear Cave Mountain Adventures camp is a remote camp located in the Fishing Branch Ni’iinlii Njik Park in the Yukon Territory. The primary activity here is bear viewing, and it is a very special experience. Thermal spring-fed rivers, allow warm waters to flow during winter’s first snows, and the late salmon run gives the grizzly bears the last feast before hibernation. During the Autumn months, the bears feature with immaculate pelts chasing and catching chum salmon as they arrive on the spawning grounds. The winter weeks highlight the unique “Ice Bear” phenomena. The Grizzlies here, are dubbed the ‘ice bears’ due to the ice that forms on their coats. After just moments of submersion whilst fishing for salmon, their coats freeze once they are exposed to the sub-zero air temperature.

Blachford Lake Lodge £££££

  • Canada
  • B&B, Motel and Guesthouse

Situated in the Canadian Northwest Territories that neighbour the Yukon, Blachford Lake Lodge is a half-hour float plane flight from Yellowknife, the capital. The remote location means no light pollution and the lodge is one of the best places to observe the Aurora borealis. Blachford Lake Lodge can accommodate up to 65 guests in rooms in the main lodge and additional cabins are heated by wood-burning stoves. Like many of the lodges, Blachford Lake Lodge is seasonal, offering a variety of activities during the summer and winter months including hiking, fishing, canoeing, skiing and snowmobiling and of course the Northern lights.
