Ladakh, bordered by Tibet, a lesser know, yet equally fascinating region in India has an almost moonlike terrain, surrounded by some of the greatest mountain ranges of the world. It is also home to the elusive snow leopard. Our classic Ladakh holiday idea is a good place to start when planning a visit to the region of Ladakh.
A weekly flight connects Ladakh with Kashmir, avoiding the arduous road journey along the 434 kilometre Srinagar – Leh highway. Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, once offered the Moghuls and British Rulers refuge from the summer heat. Today with its famed gardens, lakes, waterways and houseboats, Srinagar offers a captivating place to visit in Kashmir.
It’s all here. Things to see and do, places to explore and moments to discover.
Ladakh is the last refuge of pure Tibetan Buddhism and the sprawling old monasteries exude an atmosphere and smell which only comes with great age. It can be one of the most rewarding Himalayan trekking regions, where you will find isolated, almost Italianesque villages which are irrigated by the glaciers above but surrounded by desert. The capital, Leh, is a delight; and a day or so wandering the streets and visiting the Stok Palace located on the hillside above is essential.
It is now possible to explore this compellingly beautiful and remote region of India while staying in superb accommodation, where previously it has barely existed. Accommodation is in beautifully converted, traditional Ladakhi homes in unspoilt villages – where you journey in comfort combining trekking, rafting, jeep safaris and visits to monasteries. There are a number of luxury nomad camps that offer incredible luxury and open up the best and most remote locations. Ask one of our experts for advice on which to choose from.
