Rhinoceros, Kaziranga National Park, India

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga in North East India is a stunning park with a great conservation success story for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. Not only the homeland of the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, but the park also provides shelter to a variety of other wildlife from wild elephant to leopard, jungle cat and otter.

A lesser-visited park due to its location, it offers those who make the journey there a very rewarding experience. Jeep safaris are easily arranged and less restrictive than those in the Central Indian Parks; however, elephant safaris have been suspended for visitors at the park until further notice.

Jeep safaris will remain operational but will be subject to favourable weather and road conditions during the monsoon.

Conservation Success

Since 2015 the number of rhinos has increased in Kaziranga National Park, as has the tiger population, with more sightings of cubs. Of the 167 tigers counted in Assam, more than 125 are believed to be at the Kaziranga National Park. Around 20 tiger cubs have been sighted in different pockets of the park. Although offering the highest density of tiger in India, the lush undergrowth and foliage make them harder to spot. Most visitors to Kaziranga go to experience the beauty of the landscape, the incredible birdlife and see wild elephant and one-horned rhino.

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.
