Hippo standing in river, Chobe National Park, Botswana

Chobe National Park

Home to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife on the African continent, particularly elephants.

Although one of Botswana’s busiest parks, Chobe is definitely worth a visit for its sheer number of different habitats and immense big game population.

The park stretches from the northern tip of Botswana to the outskirts of the Okavango Delta, with the Chobe River running along the border to the north, separating it from Namibia.

Spectacular game viewing

From the floodplains that surround the river to the grasslands of the Savuti Marsh, a unique abundance of wildlife and birdlife can be seen here. Vast herds of elephant, sometimes five hundred or so strong, frequent the water’s edge making game viewing by boat spectacular.

Easy access

Access to the area is easy, with direct flights into Kasane from Johannesburg. Road transfers are possible from neighbouring Victoria Falls and Livingstone, making it ideal for those limited on time and wanting a short safari, or for a stopover en route to the Okavango Delta.

Accommodation in Chobe National Park

Most accommodation in the area is on the riverfront itself, as well as in the Savuti area to the west with its rich marshlands.

Illona Cross

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.
