Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp, Okavango Delta

Okavango Delta

Waterways glisten like the fine silks of a spider’s web and the seasonal swamps and floodplains provide a fertile breeding ground and a haven for birds and aquatic life.

Made up of lagoons, channels and islands, the Okavango Delta is one of the world’s largest wetland ecosystems, teeming with wildlife. Starting in Angola’s western highlands, it has no outlet to the sea and empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert creating an oasis.

The Diversity of the Delta

Stay in style or camp in comfort – the choice of accommodation is as varied as the activities on offer. Split into private concessions, as well as reserves like the Moremi, this vast protected area is home to a multitude of wildlife – from lions to wild dogs.

This striking lodge is a world away from the traditional tented camp. Sculpted from beautifully pale wood, it mimics a pangolin’s scales and curves with its contemporary design. Despite this eye-catching architecture, there is little doubt that Sandibe Safari Lodge is fully immersed in the delta, with trees erupting through its decks and wildlife wandering between the suites. Located in the heart of the Okavango Delta, it sits within a private concession that borders the renowned Moremi Game Reserve.

Illona Cross

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.
