Zita Cobb

When returning back to Fogo Island, philanthropist and businesswoman Zita Cobb had a vision to create a positive impact on the island of her birth. Through business, specifically when you transact money, Zita firmly believes that it should benefit nature and culture and add value to its surroundings. And Fogo Island Inn does exactly that.

Born out of a desire for business to add value and transform the community, the Inn has helped to facilitate the continuing process of cultural and economic revitalisation on Fogo Island. In addition to catalysing a renaissance of traditional building techniques, the Inn and its associated projects have created substantial employment opportunities in a region previously devastated by the decline of the cod fishery, and Fogo Islanders have acquired new skills to sustain them for years to come. Of crucial significance is that the Inn follows the innovative and radical social business model. It is a community asset: 100% of operating surpluses are reinvested in the community of Fogo Island through Shorefast. As such, the Inn stands to promote sustainable economic prosperity on Fogo Island, a community that once stood on the brink of extinction.

Like something out of Grand Designs, this modern piece of architecture is as minimalist as its surroundings seem, yet it provides a warm welcome and homely escape to one of the ‘four corners of the earth’. This is a region so remote, only icebergs and humpback whales float by. If you yearn to slow your pace and connect with wild surroundings, whilst ensuring that your time has a positive impact Fogo Island Inn is for you.

Fogo Island Inn, Newfoundland

A contemporary retreat that is perched on a craggy outcrop of Fogo Island off Newfoundland’s dramatic shoreline, Fogo Island Inn combines contemporary luxury with all that is traditional of the North Atlantic.

Teetering on the edge, supported by flamingo-like stilts that look like they could barely withstand the tiniest splash from the Atlantic Ocean, Fogo Island Inn is a high-end property that offers 29 rooms, each individually designed with crafted woods, hand-sewn quilts and artful wallpaper that reflect the island’s old traditions.
