What is Kumbh Mela?

The Kumbh Mela in January 2025, is the culmination of 12 years of Hindu worship and ceremony. Over a period of 12 years there are smaller festivals, but none is bigger or more auspicious than this one! Taking place only once every twelve years, the ‘Purna Kumbh’ celebrates and commemorates the triumph of the Gods over the demons in the battle for Amrit, the nectar of immortality. During the battle, four drops of nectar fell to the earth; a drop each on the cities of Allahabad, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. Over the centuries, pilgrims have celebrated the triumph of good over evil by bathing in the rivers near the four locations where the Amrit is said to have fallen, an act that is said to pave the way to salvation.

Varanasi - Morning Prayer on the Ganges

Get up early at the crack of dawn for a memorable boat journey to witness the Subah or morning prayer ritual on the Ganges. Spiritually enlightening and spectacularly photogenic, Varanasi is at its brilliant best by the ghats, the long stretch of steps leading down to the water on the western bank of the Ganges. Observe the living traditions of one of the world’s oldest religions as pilgrims perform morning prayer to the backdrop of the rising sun.

Kolkata Flower Market

Dazzling, high-definition colours and intoxicating floral aromas have been constant companions to the Kolkata traders who have been selling flowers for over 150 years at the city’s famous market alongside the Hooghly river. Saying it with flowers is the Indian way, and no flower says it better than the humble marigold. The vibrant colours are believed to represent the energy of the sun and across the market, mountains of marigolds radiate a vitality that is matched only by the relentless ebb and flow of traders and buyers.
