On a ridge overlooking the hills of Myanmar and Laos, the Anantara Resort Golden Triangle is as enchanting as the region in which it’s located.
With suites of varying sizes, lovely open-sided restaurants with far-reaching views and an opportunity to spend time with the resident elephants, the Anantara has always been a great choice for a few days in the Golden Triangle.
We’ve been using this resort for many years with great success. The views are staggering, and the resort offers plenty of space to enjoy the surroundings. We applaud the non-riding policy of their resident elephants.
With the Mekong on its doorstep, the Anantara is the best spot for cruising gently down the river to where it meets to become the Golden Triangle of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. Visit nearby Wat Pa Sak, a 14th Century historical site, Chiang Rai with its markets and interesting Hall of Opium Museum, to gain an understanding of this region’s past.
For those who love elephants and want to support local conservation elephants, the Anantara work hard with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation supporting elephants and their mahouts who’ve come mostly from illegal logging camps or elephant shows. Sponsor an elephant, wander gently with them into the jungle or have a picnic while the elephants are on their lunchtime stroll. As with all Steppes Travel involvement with captive elephants, there is no riding.
The Anantara Chiang Rai is located on the banks of the Mekong, a one-hour drive from Chiang Rai centre and its international airport.
We know a thing or two about bespoke holidays – we’ve been creating them since 1989. Take a trip through the Thailand Holidays that we love today.
