Tailor-Made Holiday

Dunes of Sossusvlei and Wildlife of the North

12 days

from $7,595pp (excluding flights)

Begin with the windswept dunes of Sossusvlei – best admired from a balloon, before tracking desert rhinos in Kunene and exploring the exclusive, wildlife-rich Ongava Reserve. Journey across Namibia in comfort, flying over its inspiring landscape.

  • Take a sunrise balloon ride over the majestic dunes of Sossusvlei.
  • Track rare desert rhinos in the protected Palmwag Reserve
  • Fly over Namibia’s magnificent landscape, avoiding long road journeys
  • Stay at Little Ongava, at the heart of a private concession that borders Etosha

The dunes of Sossusvlei offer the perfect starting point. Intriguingly beautiful and now iconic of the Namib Desert, this landscape is perfect for exploration by quad bike, on foot and in 4x4 vehicles. Stay at Little Kulala, which offers magnificent views of the surrounding dunes and impressive desert terrain. Take an early-morning balloon ride as the dawn light illuminates this ethereal landscape.

At night, watch as the beauty of the desert changes and the majesty of the African night sky is brought to life. Star gaze and stare in wonder at the sheer number of lights in the sky. Or even sleep out under the stars, in one on of the lodge’s specially designed star beds.

From Sossusvlei, fly north to the remote Palmwag Reserve, home to the majority of Namibia’s desert rhino population. Hidden amongst the harsh landscape of Kunene – a smorgasbord of browns, reds and greys, this hard-to-reach concession is full of wildlife. Track rhinos across this dry terrain, getting close on foot, led by an experienced tracker.

After a day out amidst the rocks and scrub of the reserve, return to the camp to relax in tented comfort. Blending in with the natural environment, this traditional safari camp offers an unspoilt, wild experience. Sip drinks around the blazing fire pit and dine under the stars. The atmosphere of the camp is intimate and relaxed, making the most of its remote location.

Leave Kaokoland behind for the wildlife-rich private concession of Ongava, bordering Namibia’s famous Etosha National Park. Here, head to the reserve’s smallest accommodation offering, Little Ongava. Beautifully situated, this pocket-sized lodge houses just three spacious suites.

Explore the landscape of the private reserve, led by a dedicate guide and with free use of an open-topped 4x4 vehicle. Make the most of one of Namibia’s finest wildlife destination, spotting elephants, lions, cheetahs, gemsboks, hartebeests and even rhinos. Back at the lodge, relax and indulge in some time to unwind, away from the game. Private plunge pools offer the perfect place to pass some time whilst admiring the wonderful surroundings.

This flying safari links three of Namibia’s greatest sights, staying at a handful of secluded lodges. Perfect as a honeymoon or couple’s break, it combines desert, safari and luxury. Wildlife features heavily, with desert rhinos a uniquely Namibian phenomenon, whilst activities abound amidst the sand-dune playground of Sossusvlei.

Day 2

Fly Johannesburg to Windhoek

Namibia's capital and only city, Windhoek, is a vibrant place of many contrasts. Seemingly misplaced German architecture stands side by side with modern sky scrapers, while African drums and wood-carvings from the north displayed on pavements vie with elegant shops offering sophisticated Swakara garments and gemstone jewellery.

A pedestrian-friendly city with a cosmopolitan outlook, Windhoek makes for a wonderful stopover. This is modern Africa at its most fascinating - a melting pot of modernity, colonial echoes and African tradition.

You will be staying at The Olive Exclusive, Half board

Day 3

Travel from Windhoek to Sossusvlei (Air Transfer Journey)

In the heart of the Namib-Naukluft Park, surrounded by a sea of ever changing dunes lies Sossusvlei - a place of awe inspiring beauty and home to some pretty spectacular scenery. Burnt orange dunes tower into the vast blue sky, some 300 metres above the desert floor. It's hard not to be moved by this desolate wilderness.

Scenic air and hot air balloon flights, sunset game drives, hiking trips, horseback trails and more await; and for those with added sense of adventure, climbing the dunes is an unforgettable experience.

You will be staying at Little Kulala Camp, All inclusive

Day 4

Activities at Little Kulala
Explore the spectacular landscape of Sossusvlei. Visit the famous dunes and clay pan, as well as the nearby Dead Vlei - now iconic with its skeletal trees. Also explore the dramatic Sesriem Canyon, take nature drives through the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, follow walking trails and ride quad bikes across this fantastic terrain.

At night, the activities continue. After a sundowner drive to watch the sunset, take a scorpion night walk, sleep in an open-air star bed or star gaze with expert help.
Additional activities, such as balloon flights and horse riding can be arranged at an extra cost.

Day 5

Balloon Flight
Set off at dawn and watch the sun rise over the vast dune-dominated landscape. Float silently above Sossusvlei, as the morning sun begins to light the desert. Return to the ground after an hour, with a champagne breakfast waiting at the landing site.

Spend the rest of the day taking advantage of the range of activities available.

Day 6

Travel from Sossusvlei to Damaraland (Air Transfer Journey)

Travel from Damaraland to Palmwag Reserve (Air Transfer Journey)

Home to the largest free roaming population of black rhino in Africa, as well as desert-adapted elephant, Palmwag is a very important reserve indeed. Located in northern Damaraland between Etosha and the Skeleton Coast, this area is known for its stark desert beauty and is home to amazing wildlife and an abundance of endemic birdlife.

You will be staying at Desert Rhino Camp, All inclusive

Day 7

Days at Desert Rhino Camp
Activities at the Rhino Camp concentrate on rhino tracking. Start out early this morning in a 4x4 vehicle, searching for wildlife. Meanwhile, trackers are out and about, looking for rhino. When one is found, they radio over to your vehicle, which approaches to a point which doesn't disturb the rhino. This may be a kilometre or more away.
You then go in closer on foot, with your guide, at a slow and steady pace. The trackers will always ensure that you stay a safe distance away, but the sheer exhilaration of being within a couple of hundred metres of a rhino whilst on foot more than makes up for the fact that you do not get right up to it.

Although the walking isn't very strenuous, the terrain can be uneven as the landscape is strewn with small rocks and boulders. Sure-footedness and sturdy walking shoes are therefore recommended.

You will join the lodge shared activities here.

Day 8

Continue to explore the Palmwag Reserve, in search of rhinos and other game.

Etosha National Park is one of Southern Africa's finest and most important game reserves.

Situated in northern Namibia, Etosha, meaning 'Great White Place', is dominated by a massive shimmering mineral pan, which is flat, rugged and, for much of the year, dry and dusty. All the same, it supports some of the best game viewing in the whole of Southern Africa.

You will be staying at Little Ongava, All inclusive

Day 10

Activities at Ongava Reserve
Take game drives across the Ongava Reserve in search of the array of wildlife that lives here, setting out twice a day - early in the morning and again in the afternoon in the company of an expert guide. "Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
