Tailor-Made Holiday

Mexico - Copper Canyon and Baja California

16 days

from $5,375pp (excluding flights)

There are few secrets left in Mexico, but the Copper Canyon has been kept better than most. A world away from the well-known beaches and Mayan ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula, lies a vast desert like area with huge canyons that cut deep into the landscape, home to indigenous communities and breath-taking scenery. This journey combines one of the greatest train rides in the world with the spectacular Pacific Coast.  Experience one of the greatest train rides in the world.

  • Explore the spectacular network of canyons by foot or by horse
  • Visit Jesuit churches and wander through the scented pine forests
  • Encounter the Tarahumara; the indigenous people of this incredible landscape
  • Snorkel with whale sharks and swim with sea lions
  • Relax on the beaches of Los Cabos

Board the Chihuahua Express for a spectacular journey through the Copper Canyon. Alight at various stages over several days to visit old Jesuit churches, lakes and waterfalls and stay in small hotels; some with spectacular views.  Walk amongst the extraordinary rock formations and the pine forests where the cooler, scented air brings a refreshing contrast to the hotter and deeper parts of the canyon network. For those looking for a less sedate experience, there is now a series of zip lines (one is over a kilometre in length) giving visitors an adrenaline fuelled day soaring across the canyon gathering speeds of some 60mph.

Leave the Copper Canyon behind for Baja California. Rich in wildlife and history, Baja California is home to unique wildlife that is effortlessly accessible. Take a boat out to watch the grey whales and their young or spend a day swimming with the sea lions or snorkelling with whale sharks  before relaxing on the Pacific Coast with a wide range of spoiling luxury hotels to choose from.

Day 1

Day at leisure in Mexico City

When the Aztec observed an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a snake, they believed this was a sign to stop their wanderings and build an empire. Today Mexico City is one of the largest capitals in the world, a city of contrasts and one that encapsulates all that is Mexican - it is vibrant, overwhelming, captivating and bursting with energy.

You will be staying at Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico, bed and breakfast

Day 2

Full Day Teotihuacan and Mexico City's Historic Centre
You will be met by your guide this morning to start the exploration of Teotihuacán. This experience takes you to one of the most important Mesoamerican sites in the Americas. With your expert, bilingual guide, explore the archaeological zone while learning about the rituals, cosmology, beliefs and everyday lives of the Aztecs and the inhabitants of Teotihuacán before them. You will have the chance to climb the 65m tall Pyramid of the Sun and the 43m high Pyramid of the Moon affording fantastic views across the city.

After lunch (not included) continue to the Zócolo (Central Square), the second largest plaza in the world. Here you can visit the National Palace, notable for Diego Rivera's murals depicting more than a thousand years of Mexican history as well as the Metropolitan Cathedral. The cathedral took almost 300 years to complete and displays a variety of architectural styles.

Day 3

Mexico City's Southern Neighbourhoods Full Day
6-8 hour privately guided visit of Mexico City's charming southern neighbourhoods. Visits include the colonial suburbs of Coyoacan and San Angel along with a visit to the Frida Kahlo and Dolores Olmedo Museums. You will also have the opportunity of visiting Xochimilco, an ancient series of channels lined with floating gardens that are best visited on a flower-draped trajinera (Mexican punt). We recommend lunch at the San Angel Inn or Fonda San Angel (Lunch is not included in the price).

Frida Kahlo Museum: Hidden behind high cobalt blue walls at the corner of Londres and Allende in this charming southwestern suburb, the museum is where the surrealist artist Frida Kahlo was born, grew up and later lived with her muralist husband Diego Rivera, from 1941 until her death at age 47 in 1954. Fascinating collection of personal effects of the two great artists, affording a window on the lifestyles of affluent Mexican bohemians during the first half of this century.

Dolores Olmedo: In 1962, she acquired a property at La Noria, Xochimilco in southern Mexico City, which she would later convert into a museum in 1994. She donated her entire collection of art including pre-Hispanic, colonial, folk, modern and contemporary art. Dolores Olmedo Patiño Museum also hosts the greatest collection of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Angelina Beloff.

El Fuerte to Posada Barrancas by Chihuhua Aa Pacifico train

Transfer to El Fuerte's train station this morning for your First Class scenic train journey to Posada Barrancas (213km. Depart 08.40 and arrive 13.58).

The Chihuahua al Pacifico railway, is among the world's most scenic railway journeys. A considerable feat of engineering, it has 39 bridges and 86 tunnels along 655km of railway line. It connects the mountainous and arid interior of northern Mexico to the sun-drenched shores of the Pacific coast. It was opened in 1961 after many decades of construction. Used heavily by both passengers and freight, the train offers a fantastic journey through some of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery that Mexico has to offer.

The train starts by passing through grey and misty farmland, before starting to climb into the mountains of the Sierra Tarahumara, home to the Tarahumara Indians. The trip then becomes an exciting sequence of craggy cliffs, sheer canyon walls and rushing rivers far below. On arrival at the station, Posada Barrancas, descend the train and take the hotel transfer to the Mirador Hotel.

Posada Barrancas is located in a stunning setting, over looking the dramatic Copper Canyon. This is a popular place to stay and admire the views. It is perfectly situated for exploring the surrounding area and learning about the local cultures.

Hernan Cortes visited in 1535 but the region remained largely unpopulated until the 19th century. Pearl diving was the main industry here until the 1930's. Today, La Paz is the starting point for exploring a wealth of marine life within the Sea of Cortez

Located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, San Jose del Cabo (more commonly referred to as Los Cabos in conjunction with Cabo San Lucas) is a real mixture of an authentic Mexican town with cobblestone streets radiating from the zocalo and mission church and the marina area, which is the modern face of Mexico with a host of bars, shops and restaurants.

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
