A little more about the Yucatan Peninsula

Spanish influence is still evident in the walled city of Campeche with San Miguel Fort proudly guarding the city. Also steeped in history is the handsome colonial city of Merida with many narrow cobbled streets, intimate shady plazas and the beautiful henequen haciendas.

Travelling throughout the Yucatan area a network of underground rivers and lagoons await exploration through innumerable limestone sinkholes. These fascinating cenotes are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving. The wetlands provide excellent bird watching opportunities, and the Caribbean coastline fringed with beautiful beaches provides a variety of water sports.

I was inspired to travel south from an early age. My form teacher when I was nine made us listen to tapes from Shackleton’s expeditions, I didn’t know it at the time, but it obviously left a deep impression on my psyche.
