Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda

Kidepo Valley National Park

Uganda’s remotest park, bordering South Sudan, is wilderness at its most raw.

Under an impossibly huge sky, this is where you can see the earth’s curve and we can guarantee you will have the park – and game – to yourself. Lions, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, zebra (this is Uganda’s only park where giraffe and zebra are found together), possibly Africa’s largest herds of buffalo, hartebeest, waterbuck, bushbuck, warthog… the list is endless.

A little more about Kidepo Valley National Park

As if the game here was not enough, the chance to visit the Karamajong people in the region is a huge draw and as far from a contrived community visit as you can get. Imagine endless plains with no tourists, dotted with ridges and valleys begging to be explored on foot, where animals roam in a wild amphitheatre ringed by jagged mountains – if you could design your own wildlife park, it would look like this. Game drives, walking safaris, night drives, visits to Karamajong, star gazing – just take your pick.

Why visit Kidepo

  • Some of Africa’s most exclusive game viewing in one of its wildest parks
  • Head out on thrilling walks across valleys and ridges with South Sudan in the distance
  • Spend time in the company of the incredibly welcoming Karamajong people
  • Only 5% of tourists who visit Uganda make it to Kidepo
  • Whilst Kidepo is already pretty out there, there are rumours of fly camping on the cards and those mountains are just waiting to be climbed

Apoka Lodge

The adventurous nature of flying in over the mountains, the liberating sense of space when landing, and the genuine warmth and welcome of the staff make Apoka Safari Lodge very, very special.

The handful of spacious and comfortable rooms are scattered manyatta-style around kopjes. The main dining and lounge areas are raised off the ground under a high thatched roof to take advantage of the breeze as you watch animals graze on the savannah below and there is also a refreshing swimming pool, much needed in this dusty northern wilderness.

Illona Cross

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management.

Chris Johnston

Chris is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Africa.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.
