Tailor-Made Holiday

Panama- Sailing San Blas

11 days

from £3,595pp (excluding flights)

Private charters are a wonderful way to explore a territory - none more so than in the autonomous Kuna Yala region where the 365 islands of the San Blas Archipelago make up a small slice of paradise.

  • Sail the San Blas Archipelago by private catamaran
  • Meet the Kuna people and learn about island life
  • Dine on lobster, giant crab & fresh ceviche
  • Visit the historical bay of Portobelo
  • Navigate Gatun Lake by boat for excellent wildlife opportunities

Begin in the vibrant capital of Panama City.  A fascinating blend of ancient, colonial and modern architecture, with a vast selection of restaurants and cafés. Of course no visit to Panama City is complete without a visit to the Panama Canal.

Your journey continues by rail to the north coast and the city of Colón.  From Colón your guide will take you to Gatun locks the first set of locks on the Atlantic side of the canal, followed by a boat trip around Gatun Lake for excellent wildlife opportunities and an impressive view of the vast container ships moving through the canal.

Few people make the effort to visit Portobelo, but it is worth experiencing its swashbuckling history. Visit the old customs house museum and there are a number of islands, beaches and mangroves to be explored.

Return to Panama City for a short domestic flight to the San Blas Archipelago.  Met by your French hosts Marie and Manu spend the next four nights on your private catamaran, dining on fresh lobster barbequed on a desert island, explore the villages of the Kuna people and snorkel in the tropical waters.

Day 1

Day at leisure in Panama City

Panama City is an exciting cosmopolitan city, a capital of great contrasts. The sparkling skyscrapers of a healthy present tower over the archaeological remain of ancient Panama Viejo, the faded grandeur of the French-style mansions in Casco Antiguo and the clinical Canal Zone.

Explore this fascinating, bustling new city, wander the narrow streets of the old town where a huge regeneration programme is in progress restoring the old buildings to their former glory or take a trip out to Amador Quays.

You will be staying at Concordia Hotel, bed and breakfast

Day 2

Private Half Day City Tour
Private transfer to Miraflores to observe the huge vessels in transit along the Panama Canal and how they are lifted or lowered in two distinct stages. In addition, visit the Museum and Visitor Centre for an insight into the history and construction of the Canal. Continue on to the Amador Causeway, a major road network that connects three Pacific islands. Explore the narrow streets of Panama City’s colonial quarter. Looted and destroyed by the notorious English buccaneer Henry Morgan in 1671, the original foundations of Panama City were later abandoned leaving a number of impressive ruins to explore today.

Proyecto Esperanza Tour
This fascinating four hour walking tour involves the community. The guides are young people who had a difficult past, involved in drugs and street gangs. Thanks to the Fundación Esperanza, which works in social projects in Casco Viejo, these young people are finding new purpose through tourism. During the tour they will explain about the changes that Casco Viejo has experienced since 1994 with the declaration of world heritage status (UNESCO) and touch on recent and colonial history.

You will be staying at Concordia Hotel, bed and breakfast

Day 3

Canal Railway, Agua Clara Locks & San Lorenzo Fort Tour
Undertake a train trip on the historical and original railway from Panama City to Colon. This one-hour journey leads you through tropical jungle and along the Panama Canal. The line was finished in 1855 and the French Panama Canal company acquired the railway line in 1880. In 1904 the Americans bought the Canal along with the railway line and operated it until 1979. In 1998, Panama privatised the railway and renewed it completely.

Meet your guide on arrival in Colón and transfer to the impressive Agua Clara Visitor Centre, located on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. The centre offers tremendous views of Gatun Lake, where cargo ships and other vessels transit every day.

Continue to San Lorenzo Fort, located at the entrance of the Chagres River close to Colon. It was along this river that pirate, Henry Morgan, sailed to burn and loot the city of Old Panama. To get to San Lorenzo, it is necessary to cross the Gatun Locks and get into Sherman Fort, a former military base, surrounded by a rich jungle with a wide diversity of species. It is a special place for bird watching. To complete the tour, lunch will be served at Los Lagartos restaurant overlooking the Chagres River, after which you will be transferred back to your hotel in Panama City.
