European Wildlife Conservation

Steppes Travel has partnered with the European Nature Trust (TENT) in order to connect people to nature and to raise funds for projects that protect and restore European wilderness.

Wild places provide the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat. The evidence is now clear: spending time in nature is even integral to mental health and stress relief, physical wellness and development in childhood.

The wild areas of Europe are a sometimes-overlooked option for immersive wildlife experiences however, right on our doorstep lies some of the most outstandingly beautiful swathes of wilderness and national parklands, rich with wildlife. Each of our engaging and impactful wildlife experiences takes you to explore some of Europe’s most hidden wild secrets, providing you with access to conservation experts, local projects on the ground and exceptional wildlife sightings.

European Nature Trust

In partnership with the European Nature Trust and local projects in-country, we provide unique experiences that connect people to wild nature and raise funds for the protection and restoration of European wilderness.

We offer a number of tailored itineraries that explore some of Europe’s wild places, while also offering fantastic accommodation, great food and unparalleled access to the projects we support.

The trips include a donation to the local project to support their work. Funds go towards programmes including conservation and restoration of high-interest habitats, monitoring of bear populations, anti-poaching initiatives and the mitigation of wildlife-human conflict.

Italy - The Apennines

Two hours east of Rome lies the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, the jewel in the crown of Italy’s park system, where around 60 Marsican brown bears (lightweight cousins of the Kodiak bear) still exist.

Spring is the best season for travelling to Abruzzo and for observing the Marsican brown bear. Roe deer, woodpeckers and owls peek out from the margins of the beech forest and colourful and rare orchids are at their best at this time of year. For wildlife lovers and adventurous souls, the mountains of the Central Apennines and the area of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park represent the wild heart of Italy.

Having travelled to different parts of the world over the years it never ceases to amaze me how you constantly learn and evolve from the adventures you experience. I adore working in an environment where I can share my passion for the world and discuss fascinating stories both from my experiences and that of our clients. In the past year I’ve delved into the wintery beauty of St Petersburg, trekked through the colourful desert in Jordan and sailed down the iconic Nile in Egypt.

The excitement of travelling the world has always hugely appealed. Largely cemented from my first solo trip to Egypt and the Middle East. The crazy hustle and bustle of Cairo was a huge assault on the senses, scrambling through the claustrophobic tunnels of the Great pyramid took me out of my comfort zone and I was left humbled by the warm hospitality of the Nubian people in Aswan as we shared dinner together.
