CBD – Habitat works tirelessly to protect the Iberian lynx and its habitats. Their aims are to foster a respect and understanding of the environment, working in partnership with local landowners to avoid lynx and human conflict. These efforts have seen the lynx grow from the 100 found in 2001 to the current 500 individuals believed to inhabit the region today.
Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas is Spain’s largest Nature Reserve and offers some of the best wilderness landscapes in the whole Iberian Peninsula. An endless chain of mountains is carved into wide valleys through which the river Guadalquivir flows and waterfalls tumble.
Home to a breeding colony of griffon vultures and lammergeier or bearded vulture, few tourists visit these extensive pine forests and impressive limestone rock faces giving a sense of space and remoteness, perfect for peaceful wildlife exploration.
Expert nature guides will be on hand to ensure the best possible wildlife sightings. Our partners are native to this part of Spain and have an intimate knowledge of the region plus an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time. While staying in Sierra de Andujar a guide from local charity CBD will also accompany Steppes clients for a lynx Safari.
Stay in charming boutique hotels, offering a genuine sense of place, local hospitality and great food. While in Sierra de Andujar time will be spent on a private farm which is working to sustain lynx habitats. This country property lies within one of the largest lynx populations and also has 17 European bison roaming free on the farm, as part of a project to “rewild” the region.
