Why visit Isfahan

Isfahan is famed for its waterways with a number of impressive bridges including the See-o Se Pol Bridge with 33 arches and an Armenian church. A fairer city would be hard to find. Strolling around here in the evening sunshine is a delight with its huge central square, formerly a polo field, surrounded by elegant mosques and palaces. At one end is the souq or bazaar where several miles of tunnels link carpet dealers, silversmiths, spice sellers and pottery traders – a wonderful place to get lost in. From the vibrant bazaars and souqs to the stunning blue tiled buildings, this bustling city is a must see for travellers to Iran.

Paul Craven

Paul is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Central Asia and the Silk Route.

Being from a family with Army connections I can from an early age remember travelling. From camping in Europe and then later being sent to boarding school when we lived in Germany at the age of eight, complete with shorts, long socks, a cap and my suitcase. In appearance not too dissimilar to the children evacuated to the countryside during the blitz.
