Black Sea Coast, Turkey

Black Sea Coast

Often overlooked by travellers, this craggy and spectacular coastline comes as a surprise with its wealth of history and dramatic scenery.

Dense alpine forests cover the mountainside, while lush vegetation and bountiful crops, including tea, tobacco, corn and hazelnuts, grow in the lower elevations and valleys.

In the springtime, delicate wild-flower blossoms carpet the rolling meadows of the eastern hills. Legend has it that Jason led his Argonauts along this coast in quest of the Golden Fleece.

It’s all here. Things to see and do, places to explore and moments to discover.

Trabzon, Turkey

Why we like the Black Sea Coast

Just south of the cosmopolitan city of Trabzon is one of the region’s most spectacular sites, the Sumela Monastery. Founded in Byzantine times and abandoned after the creation of the Turkish Republic, this incredible monastery clings to a sheer rock face 1,200 metres above alpine forests and mountain streams.

Discover Sinop

Sinop is one of the most beautiful natural harbours on the Black Sea coast and has been a trading port for over a thousand years. Mainly visited by local tourists, it is famous for its traditional nautical wood carvings, good crystal and the original cotton clothes of the city.

Kate Hitchen

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.

Katie Benden

The excitement of travelling the world has always hugely appealed. Largely cemented from my first solo trip to Egypt and the Middle East. The crazy hustle and bustle of Cairo was a huge assault on the senses, scrambling through the claustrophobic tunnels of the Great pyramid took me out of my comfort zone and I was left humbled by the warm hospitality of the Nubian people in Aswan as we shared dinner together.
