Victoria Falls from the air, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls

Although the magnificent sight of the Falls is the main reason to visit, the town is also a focal point for action-packed fun with activities.

The town of Victoria Falls lies on the southern bank of the Zambezi River at the western end of the Victoria Falls.

Activities in the area include a “Flight of Angels” helicopter ride over the falls, white water river rafting, kayaking, bungee jumping and gentle sundowner cruises along the Zambezi.

When to go

The falls are most impressive just after the rains, from May to June but later in the year up to November you will have a chance to enjoy most of the activities which are not available during the “flood” period.

What to do in Victoria Falls

This dramatic landscape forms the perfect backdrop to a number of activities, ranging from relaxed to thrill-seeking. In the air, take a helicopter flight over the falls or cross over to the Zambian side and fly low over the gorge in a microlight.

On the river, canoe above the falls, take a jet boat safari just below or venture downstream for some white-water rafting. Less adventurous options include sunset cruises on the Zambezi, fishing trips and visits to Livingstone Island.

On land, visit local villages, buy locally-made souvenirs or set out on game drives through Zambezi National Park

Illona Cross

Before joining Steppes Travel over 25 years ago, I spent a decade working as a ranger, guide and lodge manager across Southern and East Africa. It’s also a deeply personal place for me: I got married in Africa, honeymooned in Africa and still return every year with my family – proof that my love for the continent runs far deeper than just professional experience.

Almost three decades ago, I set off for a three-month trip to Africa – and ended up staying for two years. Since then, I’ve led groups through Rwanda, Uganda and Malawi, and have been named a Specialist for Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda by Condé Nast Traveller. This depth of knowledge and on-the-ground experience is something I bring to each tailor made itinerary I create.
