Tailor-Made Holiday

Gaucho Festival

Visit Buenos Aires and the Pampas for the Gaucho Festival

10 days

from £1,795pp (excluding flights)

This holiday idea is a wonderful away to experience the raw traditions of Argentina in a compact itinerary that requires no internal flying and will definitely give you more than a flavour of this vibrant country.

  • Experience Argentina’s biggest gaucho festival
  • Spend time on a traditional estancia
  • Explore Buenos Aires
  • No domestic flights required

Fly into Buenos Aires, a capital city well worth spending time in.   Take a guided tour of the city, visiting the main highlights including the district of San Telmo and the fascinating Recoleta Cemetery home to the resting place of Eva Peron.  Visit a Tango show, dine in fine restaurants or take the hydrofoil to Uruguay.

Leaving the city behind, this holiday idea takes you out to the Pampas to Estancia La Bamba de Areco, one of the oldest estancias in Argentina. Here all meals and daily activities are included allowing guests to explore by horseback or bicycle or just relax by the pool.  Traditional asados can be enjoyed as well as mate tasting and polo.  Just 13km away is the town of San Antonio de Areco where once a year the greatest festival in the country takes place.

Harping back to the 18th Century with its narrow cobbled streets, gauchos from far and wide come flocking to San Antonio de Areco to show off their horsemanship.  For one week in November, powerful gleaming Crillo horses and striking riders in full traditional dress parade around town.  Equestrian parades, breaking-in demonstrations, folk dancing, craft stalls, food stands and smoking grills can be found daily.  The atmosphere builds for the grand rodeo at the end of the week where the most skilled are crowned.

Day 2

Day at leisure in Buenos Aires

Known as 'The Paris of Latin America', Buenos Aires is quite simply one of the world's greatest cosmopolitan cities. World class museums and leading restaurants jostle for space with boutique shops and antique markets, and the colonial architecture and cobbled streets of San Telmo contrast with the modern lines and waterfront designs of up and coming Puerto Madero. It is a city with a colourful and fascinating history, which has given rise to a variety of neighbourhoods from the uber trendy Palermo Soho to the bohemian charm of La Boca, the birth place of tango.

Day 3

Half Day City Tour
A fascinating 4-hour tour of the elegant turn-of-the-century districts that earned Buenos Aires the sobriquet 'the Paris of South America'. Begin the tour on the charming cobbled alleyways of San Telmo with its colonial architecture, before moving on to the Plaza de Mayo that is dominated by the the government house Casa Rosada, the Nación Bank, the cathedral and the original parliament houses. Continue up the leafy Avenida de Mayo towards the imposing grandeur of the Palace of Congress, before ending your tour at the historically fascinating Recoleta Cemetery. Discover the facts, stories and anecdotes that make up the colourful tapestry that is Buenos Aires.

Day 6

Drive from Buenos Aires to Pampas

Leave the city behind for the sprawling Pampas; flatlands home to vast estancias and a strong agricultural industry.

The sophisticated capital of Buenos Aires may be at Argentina's head, but the heart of the nation and the people is out in the countryside. It was here, in the fertile and limitless pampas that the proud, rebellious and passionate Argentinian character was forged and the country's fortunes made. The original gauchos (cowboys) of the pampas, who spent their lives on horseback roaming from ranch to ranch, may have disappeared, but the estancias themselves remain, many of which have now opened their doors to guests. A couple of days at an estancia is the perfect counterpoint to a stay in Buenos Aires, allowing you a unique and privileged insight into the old-world charms of pampas life and the chance to gallop around with modern day gauchos.

You will be staying at Estancia La Bamba, Bed & Breakfast

Day 7

La Bamba Activities
Days at leisure to relax at La Bamba. Choose from a number of activities including horse riding, mountain biking, horse drawn carriage experiences, Argentinean bowls games, treat yourself to a massage or just unwind by the pool.
Each year during November, the town of San Antonio de Areco sees the annual Gaucho Festival, a tradition that has run for more than 70 years where competitors flock from all over the country in their finery to demonstrate their skills. This is a wonderful spectacle with some nail biting performances.
