from £6,395pp (excluding flights)

This holiday idea takes you to the heart of Argentina for its world-class fishing, spectacular riding, lively culture and finally to the beaches of Brazil.

  • Stay in a luxury lodge in the wilds of Patagonia for superb fly fishing
  • Ride with the gauchos in spectacular scenery
  • Explore the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires
  • Visit Iguazu falls
  • Relax on the fashionable beaches of Buzios in Brazil.

Your holiday begins in Buenos Aires, the home of Tango. Experience the city, dine in fine restaurants and take in a tango show.

Fly south to Bariloche in the Lake District in Northern Patagonia. Hire a car and explore the region. Drive or cycle the route of the seven lakes or take a boat across the Lake Nahuel Huapi.  In contrast to southern Patagonia this area is incredibly lush.  The ice blue glacial lakes, thick pine forests and high peaks provide dramatic scenery and vivid colours.

From Bariloche drive to San Martin de Los Andes. Stay at Tipiluke Lodge and spend a few days fly fishing and riding. Hiking, bird watching, national park visits can also be arranged.  Tipiluke is an authentic estancia with a strong focus on comfort and quality. Covering some 50,000 acres of Patagonia at the foot of the Andes mountain range, this is more than a slice of the real Argentina. Fly fish the crystal clear rivers or ride out with the gauchos.

Leaving Patagonia behind, fly north to the lush tropical rainforest of Iguazu. Visit the thundering falls before flying to Brazil and the golden beaches of Buzios.  Spend time relaxing at Insólito or take out the hotel boat for water sports and exploring the nearby coves and beaches.    Return to Rio de Janeiro for a day’s sightseeing before catching your evening flight home.

Day 2

Day at leisure in Buenos Aires

Known as 'The Paris of Latin America', Buenos Aires is quite simply one of the world's greatest cosmopolitan cities. World class museums and leading restaurants jostle for space with boutique shops and antique markets, and the colonial architecture and cobbled streets of San Telmo contrast with the modern lines and waterfront designs of up and coming Puerto Madero. It is a city with a colourful and fascinating history, which has given rise to a variety of neighbourhoods from the uber trendy Palermo Soho to the bohemian charm of La Boca, the birth place of tango.

Discover the facts, stories and anecdotes that make up the colourful tapestry that is Buenos Aires.

Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil meet where the Iguazú river joins the Paraná river in the north-eastern Argentinean province of Misiones. It is here that the Iguazú Falls (meaning 'Big Water' in the local Guaraní language) plunges over hard granite into a wide gorge in a series of gigantic waterfalls measuring two miles in length and plunging more than 240 feet below. The thunderous roar of crashing water and the multicoloured mist that rises above the falls is an incredible, awe-inspiring sight that has lost none of its impact since first discovered by Europeans in 1542.

Argentina side of falls and Gran Aventura
Half day private excursion to the Argentine side of the falls, walking along wooden walkways right over some of the smaller falls surrounded by lush sub-tropical jungle. A highlight of this side of the falls are the huge number of butterflies and the coatimundi - small racoon-like animals - that run around the pathways. Afterwards, enjoy an exhilarating ride upriver in inflatable dinghies to the base of the Argentine side of the falls. This is an adventure in itself, as the boat leaps through the spray of the rapids - you may get wet and want to take a change of clothes.

Day 17

Travel from Buzios to Rio de Janeiro

A journey of two and a half hours.

Full Day Tour of Rio with Sugar Loaf, Corcovado & Santa Teresa
Visit Corcovado, one of the world's best-known and most-visited monuments and one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. Board a small train that takes visitors to the top of the mountain that stands some 2,300 feet above sea level. Below the mighty Christ the Redeemer, experience a panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro.

Continue to the charming district of Santa Teresa with its unique hillside geography, history and alternative urban lifestyle. This picturesque neighbourhood that began as the site of a Carmelite Convent (still present) in the 18th Century, is today home to some of Brazil's most vibrant artists - many of whom open their home studios to the public. Rio's elegance and colourful artistic side is expressed in Santa Teresa's beautiful flowers, large elegant old houses, winding streets and breath-taking views. This is a great place to stop and have lunch.

Continue to downtown Rio. At the Lapa Arches Rio's modern Cathedral can be found. Other interesting sites include Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre, Marechal Floriano Square, also known as Cinelandia, where the best examples of late 18th century French style architecture can be seen, such as the Municipal Theatre, the Fine Arts Museum and the National Library.

Drive to the Urca district where one of the iconic symbols of the city is located, Sugar Loaf Mountain. Rising up from a small peninsula at the entrance of Guanabara Bay, its name is said to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape of a refined sugar loaf. The tour at Sugar Loaf is a two step process by glass cable-cars. The first cable-car takes visitors to the top of Urca Hill, which rises 710 feet above sea level and offers spectacular views of the entire bay and its islands. Continue in a second cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf which rises 1300 feet above sea level and offers a 360 degree view of the entire city. Downtown Rio de Janeiro, the Southern beaches, Corcovado and Niteroi Bridge lie below.

This excursion concludes with a visit to the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon.
