Caiman is a private reserve located on 53,000 hectares in the southern Pantanal, renowned for its strong focus on conservation. It consists of the main Casa Caiman, plus an exclusive-use lodge, with a restaurant, pool and own guide.

Why We Like Caiman

Caiman runs a fantastically successful conservation programme, including projects focusing on jaguars, hyacinth macaws and blue-fronted parrot. Given its location in such an at-risk ecosystem, it’s this commitment to conservation that makes Caiman such a favourite of ours.

Sustainability

Onçafari Jaguar Project is the newest conservation project and unique in South America. It offers the opportunity to track wild jaguars in safari-style jeeps. The jaguars have been habituated to vehicles, allowing their fascinating behaviour to be witnessed. Ecotourism is being used as an important conservation tool, providing an important source of income for landowners and local communities. Dedicated jaguar tracking programmes operate between June and October, with several seasons seeing a 100% success rate when it came to jaguar sightings.

Facilities

Casa Caiman is the main lodge and it features 18 beautiful suites that are positioned within extensive gardens. All these suites feature private balconies, as well as air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.

Villa Baiazinha can only be booked on an exclusive-use basis. It has six rooms and is built on stilts next to a clear water lagoon that is excellent for bird watching. Guests will have a private swimming pool with deck, loungers and hammocks.

Activities

Each lodge offers a daily selection of guided excursions, with two daylight activities and one in the evening. Regular activities include photographic safaris, walking tours, canoe tours, night safaris and caiman tours. Optional activities include birdwatching, bike tours, visit to the hyacinth macaw project and tours of the Oncafari Jaguar Project.

Pousada do Parque is located on the border of the Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park overlooking its own private reserve away from town. The eight comfortable rooms are ensuite and air-conditioned and located within the main building where guests may use the cosy lounge and terrace with its hammocks and comfortable chairs. Guests will find a swimming pool and sauna. The lodge is excellently located for those wishing to explore the Three Ecosystems of Mato Grosso: the Chapada dos Guimaraes, Pantanal and the Amazon.

Baia das Pedras was built in 1960 as a working cattle farm before being converted into a charming ecolodge in 2003. Retaining its traditional style, the lodge has just two double and three triple rooms, each of which is simply but comfortably furnished and all with air conditioning. The farm kitchen specialises in traditional Pantanal cuisine, cooked on a wood-fired oven and when not exploring the Pantanal there are hammocks dotted throughout the property to relax in. The owners of the lodge raise Pantaneiro horses as well as cattle and a stay here is a great chance to learn more about the culture and life of the cowboy.

Barranco Alto £££££

Fazenda Barranco Alto is a located in the southern Pantanal, best reached by a 45-minute flight by small plane. The fazenda is a traditional cattle ranch, one of the oldest in the area, with four air-conditioned, comfortable rooms with private terraces. The area has unique ecosystems of waterways, vast floodplains, lagoons, ponds, shady forest and rich savannah grasslands. Explore the plains either on foot, open-vehicle, canoe or on horseback. Other activities include bird watching, fishing, star gazing and cattle mustering.
