South Africa Safari and Mozambique Island Escape

Sabi Sands and Benguerra Island

13 days

from $6,295pp (excluding flights)

The perfect blend of safari and beach, this holiday takes you to the heart of the Kruger and the sandy beaches of Mozambique in the highest level of comfort.

  • A Big 5 safari in South Africa’s most exclusive game reserve
  • Explore the perfect beaches and tropical waters of Benguerra Island
  • Travel in style and stay at exclusive and luxurious properties
  • Varied activities from game drives to dhow cruises and bush walks to snorkelling

Start off with some adventure in the heart of the Sabi Sands, which adjoins the Kruger National Park and is renowned for its incredible wildlife. Prepare to be completely pampered in the African bush with a stay at one of our favourite lodges – explore by game drive with expert rangers, go on bush walks and enjoy beautiful African sunsets.

Flying north to Mozambique, see the sparkling clear waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago change different shades of blue, as the helicopter comes in to land. Deserted beaches of pure white sand invite relaxation, although there are plenty of water activities on offer along the island’s shores. Spend a day at a secluded beach with a picnic, take a dhow cruise at sunset, go dolphin or whale-watching and dine under the stars.

Day 2

Fly Johannesburg to Hoedspruit

Typical Day on Safari (W)
The maxim 'the early bird catches the worm' is very apt to safaris. The wildlife is most active first thing in the morning so an early wake up call for a morning game drive is essential. Following a morning drive and a leisurely lunch there will be time to relax before venturing out in the late afternoon for another drive and to take sundowners in the bush. Having raised a glass to the setting sun, the journey back to lodge will be spent spotting nocturnal wildlife. While game drives provide the best chances of seeing most wildlife, Sabi Sands offers great opportunities for game walks with experienced rangers.

Named after the two principal rivers which flow through it, namely the Sabie and the Sand, the Sabi Sands covers a vast area of pristine African wilderness and is part of the Greater Kruger National Park where the Big Five roam freely. The sustenance of these rivers ensures that this area enjoys one of the highest and most diverse concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

Day 3

Days at Chitwa Chitwa
Spend time exploring the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, a private concession found in the southern reaches of the Kruger National Park. Integrated into the larger park, this biodiverse wilderness is home to a wealth of wildlife - big and small.

Set out on expertly guided game drives early in the morning and late in the afternoon, in specially adapted Land Rovers. Morning drives take you through the dew-dusted landscape as the diurnal animals begin to awaken. Spot elephants, rhinos, buffalos, lions, wild dogs and cheetahs.

On the other hand, afternoon drives leave camp as the heat of the day dies away and nocturnal predators begin to awaken. Watch as the sun sets over the wild landscape, stopping for sundowners as the sky grows dusky crimson.

As night approaches, begin to look out for the reserve's more elusive species, including leopards, civets, wild cats and genets. Leopards are a particular highlight here, with the Sabi Sands considered one of the best places to spot these iconic cats.

Also set out on morning bush walks, led by expert guides. These usually take place between drives, but longer walks can also be arranged, or they can be incorporated into a game drive. Bush walks are the perfect opportunity to see the bush at close quarters, providing experiences that can only be found outside of a vehicle. Identify endemic flora, spot some of the more than 350 species of birds and stumble across big game whilst exploring on foot.
