Heading into the autumn, this is a shoulder season for most of the country. This can make for a lovely time to visit as peak prices come down and the crowds ease slightly. While July falls in Chile’s low season, it can still be a rewarding destination. Since it is out of season, there will be fewer crowds in iconic locations and likely able to get better deals on hotels and flights. If you are heading to Torres del Paine in July, be aware that you may not be able to explore the reserve without a guide.

With winter still gripping Chile, expect some heavy rains with temperatures rising the further north you go. Explore Atacama’s wild landscapes and fascinating archaeological sites, or drive the Carretera Austral highway taking in the snow-capped mountains and dense forests as well as landmarks like Lago General Carrera. Witness stunning parades on the 15th August as catholic communities celebrate the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

As the snow starts to melt and the days begin to warm up, September is a great month for combining different regions of Chile. From Santiago and the central valleys to the Atacama Desert and Patagonia, you can expect smaller crowds before peak season kicks in. The weather in September is ideal for exploring the streets of Valparaíso and tasting the varied Chilean gastronomy. Explore the marble caves along the shores of Lago General Carrera, visit the Chilean Winelands for a tour and tasting and embark on a hiking tour in Patagonia.

This is the end of the low season. October marks the start of spring in the lake district, but there may still be showers. Take the opportunity to visit Easter Island before the tourist rush and enjoy the stunning landscapes across Chile as flowers begin to bloom and temperatures continue to rise.
