The best time to visit Chile

Heading into the autumn, this is a shoulder season for most of the country. This can make for a lovely time to visit as peak prices come down and the crowds ease slightly. The lake district and winelands are great to visit in March, as is Patagonia. The winelands are full of regional festivals, including the oldest in Chile in Curico. You can also witness the Campeonato Nacional de Rodeo, the biggest rodeo held in Chile, which is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The winter season begins throughout Chile in April, bringing in heavy rains with it. The southern part of the country will begin experiencing snow which can make areas inaccessible. Visitor numbers in Patagonia are much lower due to many hotels closing down for the season. However, Torres Del Paine remains open for unique wildlife viewing opportunities, like the elusive puma. As the wine season draws to a close, the Pirque Wine Festival is one of the last celebrations. For a more intimate experience, travel to the Casablanca Valley where the autumn climate allows for exploration of the scenic vineyards.

Patagonia is much quieter in May as many hotels close for the season, but there is a certain tranquillity present as you admire the awe-inspiring views of the southern icefields, glaciers and crater lakes. Torres Del Paine remains open for unique wildlife viewing opportunities, like the elusive puma. On 1st May, enjoy the lively atmosphere of the colourful parades celebrating Labour Day.

June is a fantastic time for experiencing Torres del Paine with an increased chance of spotting the elusive puma. While the south is hit by the winter, the Atacama Desert in the north is fantastic this month. Home to the city of Calama, where the modern and the indigenous blend seamlessly, the Atacama is full of wonder. The winter solstice falls in June, making for a fantastic chance to learn more about the culture here.

While July falls in Chile’s low season, it can still be a rewarding destination. Since it is out of season, there will be fewer crowds in iconic locations and likely able to get better deals on hotels and flights. If you are looking to visit Easter Island as part of your trip to Chile, then July is a great time with temperatures hovering around 18°C. If you are heading to Torres del Paine in July, be aware that you may not be able to explore the reserve without a guide.

With winter still gripping Chile, expect some heavy rains with temperatures rising the further north you go. Explore Atacama’s wild landscapes and fascinating archaeological sites, or drive the Carretera Austral highway taking in the snow-capped mountains and dense forests as well as landmarks like Lago General Carrera. Witness stunning parades on the 15th August as catholic communities celebrate the Assumption of Virgin Mary.

As the snow starts to melt and the days begin to warm up, September is a great month for combining different regions of Chile. From Santiago and the central valleys to the Atacama Desert and Patagonia, you can expect smaller crowds before peak season kicks in. The weather in September is ideal for exploring the streets of Valparaíso and tasting the varied Chilean gastronomy. Explore the marble caves along the shores of Lago General Carrera, visit the Chilean Winelands for a tour and tasting and embark on a hiking tour in Patagonia.

This is the end of the low season. October marks the start of spring in the lake district, but there may still be showers. Take the opportunity to visit Easter Island before the tourist rush and enjoy the stunning landscapes across Chile as flowers begin to bloom and temperatures continue to rise. If you are an animal lover, then visiting in October is for you; glimpse at baby pumas and guanacos in Patagonia, as well as many other animals.

Spring is in full bloom across the country, making November a great time to visit before the peak season begins in December. Make sure to book well in advance to get the best accommodation choices. Take a road trip along the Carretera Austral, hike in Torres del Paine and enjoy the winelands in the central valley.

December kicks off the peak season for travel to Chile, with the climate in its prime for visiting the most popular destinations. Torres del Paine can become busy and Valparaíso can become crowded with Chileans, particularly on the lead up to New Year. Christmas here is filled with warm markets and atmospheric festivities as the residents take to the streets to celebrate.
