Tailor-Made Holiday

Short Break to Naples

A guided tour of the WW II sites of Old Naples

5 days

from £1,045pp (excluding flights)

A recently acclaimed documentary, Naples '44 brings Norman Lewis's war diary to life. A remarkable account of Naples in the aftermath of war, we recommend you watch this documentary before visiting one of Italy's most fascinating cities.

This five day short break to Naples includes a good mix of time at leisure, to explore the many museums, galleries and cafes of Naples. In addition, spend two full days with a historian guide who will ensure the stories recounted by Norman Lewis are brought to life.

  • Take a tour of the Bourbon Tunnels - an ancient underground network of passages connecting the Royal Palace with the military barracks
  • Take a full day guided tour of the old city of Naples, visiting the WWII sites including the Royal Palace
  • Stay in the old town of Naples, pull up a chair, people watch and eat pizza - some of the best in the world
  • Take a day trip out of the city to visit Pompeii and the destroyed city of Vesuvius

Naples is a chaotic, vibrant city, with pavements shared by pedestrians and motorbikes. It may be worn around the edges but for those in the know, there are many hidden gems to discover. Did you know the church of St Eligio still shows the exact time of a particularly heavy bombing raid on the clock front today?

For those interested in history, take a guided tour visiting WWII sites including the Royal Palace and the Galleria Borbonico - the underground passages known as the Bourbon Tunnels. The Bourbon dynasty had a labyrinth of underground passages and rooms built to allow for the king to escape unnoticed. These rooms were subsequently used by the people of Naples as shelter against the heavy allied bombing that shook the city between 1940 and 1944. Prior to this, the tunnels were used as storage for illegal cars and motorbikes confiscated by the police force in the twenties and thirties. These vehicles, along with a whole host of other historic debris can still be seen in the tunnels today.

"Kate was calm and bent over backwards to accommodate my jitters about going to Kashmir in the light of tighter FCO guidelines just a few days before our departure. She was absolutely correct in advising against what I thought we should do. Several times during the holiday we said that, 'Kate was dead right about that!'."

"We asked for a rather particular kind of Indian holiday. You delivered it in full. Highlights? Honestly, each day was a highlight in itself. "
