Flamingos Lake, Logipi, Samburu, Kenya

Lake Turkana

Known as the “Jade Sea”, this vast lake lies in the very north of Kenya – remote even in a country so renowned for its wilderness.

Filling a depression formed by the Great Rift Valley, its waters end only where a volcanic plug stems their flow. The surrounding landscape is arid and desolate, punctuated by occasional lines of rocky hills and a dotted with hardy palm trees.

The Turkana tribes, renowned for the ferocity and history of intertribal conflict, roam this inhospitable region. Even now, the people and culture seem a world away from the Maasai-dominated savannah lands in the south of the country.

A little more about Lake Turkana

Unexplored and sparsely populated, Turkana attracts only the hardiest of travellers. But the rewards are great for those who can tolerate the vast distances and oppressive heat. There are few places like it in Africa and it represents the final frontier for many repeat visitors to Kenya.

Illona Cross

I have visited Kenya numerous times, as well as spending time in the Masai Mara as a safari guide at one of the camps. Having explored much of the country and stayed at a variety of camps and lodges, I always enjoy the diversity of activities on offer, including my personal favourite, horse riding.

I have explored much of Africa over the years, yet hold firm the belief that Kenya offers the best big-game experience in the world. I have walked, driven, mountain-biked, ridden and paddled past some of Africa’s most exciting wildlife whilst on safari in Kenya. And such is the style and comfort of the country’s lodges, all this was whilst within easy reach of an ice-cold G&T.
