Picture Africa in your mind’s eye and it is likely you will picture the Masai Mara, known for its prolific wildlife, rolling plains and flat-top acacia trees. Ideal for families, honeymooners, first time travellers and those returning for more, Kenya is a diverse and rewarding destination.

Our ‘Highlights of Kenya‘ holiday idea guides you through the classic journey of this superlative safari destination, but for those wanting a safari with a twist, there are other ways to explore. Weave through the open plains by e-bike for unique wildlife experiences, take to the skies for an aerial view of the vast Kenyan landscapes and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the African bush while wild camping.

Having lived, worked and extensively travelled in Kenya, our experts, Chris and Illona, know it intimately. You could not be in better hands when planning your adventure.

How to get the best out of the Mara

The reason the Masai Mara is so popular is because it offers spectacular big game, but keep in mind that this does not mean you have to follow the crowds. We know the places to avoid where the crowds can seem overwhelming. Instead, we can take you to small, privately owned conservancies where the wildlife is every bit as prolific, but the viewing is private and infinitely more memorable.

“We loved all our accommodation and experiences, but the Mara and safari experience was our highlight. It was made by the choice of camp and conservancy (thank you Steppes!) as well as our guide Martin who was exceptional. Many times we felt like we were the only people in the Mara. It was a wonderful, wild and unspoiled experience.”

Outstanding guides

Langisa Twala, Kicheche Mara Camp, Kenya

Knowledgeable and passionate, many Kenyan guides grew up on the land they now share with visitors. They read the nuances of the bush ecosystem and see things that would otherwise go unnoticed. Whether seeking that iconic photograph, creating unforgettable family memories or fulfilling a lifetime ambition to see a particular animal, we can match you with the ideal guide for a perfect safari.

“Every day out there is totally different – capturing and sharing the moment is what it is all about.” – Ken, Cottars Camp

“Africa born, I was an East African safari guide for a luxury safari company before starting at Steppes Travel 23 years ago. This experience, and subsequently travelling to Africa as a new bride and a mother, has ensured that I can create the exact holiday that you have been dreaming of.”

“Having first visited Kenya over 25 years ago, I have been lucky enough to return numerous times as both guide and guest. I absolutely love Kenya and whilst everyone claims to be an expert these days, I have the bites, scars and (embarrassing) stories to prove it.”

Best time to visit

Giraffe, El Karama Lodge, Laikipia, Kenya

The best time to visit Kenya is from July to September. Freshly nourished from the rains, the dry season sweeps in as if to herald the start of the epic Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebra travel from Tanzania. However, this depends on the experiences you wish to have; if you are a keen birder, visit between September to April as migratory birds arrive or watch as newborns take their first steps in March.
