The best time to visit Ecuador

The best time to visit Ecuador depends on what you’re seeking, with each region offering its own unique appeal.

The Andes are at their best from June to September, offering stunning landscapes and perfect trekking conditions. The Pacific Coast shines from December to April, ideal for beach lovers. The Amazon, while rewarding throughout the year, is most accessible during late summer, when rainfall is lighter.

Ecuador is truly a year-round destination, but your experience will ultimately depend on the season you choose to visit.

Information & Highlights

Vaquero on Horseback, Mountains, Clouds, Horses, Cotopaxi National Park, Ecuador

Hiking or horse riding in the Andes is a wonderful experience to add to your trip to Ecuador. The high altitude volcanoes and mountains form their own climates and they are often very different from lower landscapes. Nights, in particular, can be cold at any point throughout the year. If you want to avoid the rainier times of year then plan to travel between June and September.

Ecuador also has plenty of Rainforest to explore east of the Andes. However, as the name suggests, and despite being warm, you should prepare to get a little damp. Even in drier months, there can be moments of heavy rainfall. Don’t however, let this put you off. This sparsely populated region called El Oriente is incredibly rich in biodiversity, more than making up for any downpours.

Visiting Ecuador in February

low season

The rainy season prevails in February, with temperatures around 31°C and frequent showers on the Pacific Coast. The Andes experience heavy afternoon downpours, with occasional thunderstorms and hail, though mornings are generally pleasant with temperatures around 19°C. The Amazon sees increasing rainfall, with frequent showers and high humidity.

The wet conditions make this one of the best times to go to Ecuador for water-related activities, such as river canoeing in the Amazon or marvelling at waterfalls such as the Pailón del Diablo, or Devil’s Cauldron. February’s highlight, however, is the Carnival – a raucous nationwide celebration full of water fights, parades and music. Be mindful of pickpockets during Carnival celebrations and pack appropriately for the wet weather with waterproof gear and insect repellent.

Visiting Ecuador in March

low season

March is the peak of the wet season in Ecuador, with heavy rainfall across most regions. Temperatures in the Andes hover around 18°C, whilst the Pacific Coast remains hot and humid. The Amazon sees swollen rivers, muddy trails, intense humidity and temperatures nearer 30°C. Be mindful of potential disruptions, as landslides can affect travel in the Andes and some remote Amazon areas may be inaccessible.

This month is ideal for nature enthusiasts, particularly those keen on experiencing Ecuador’s lush landscapes. The highlands’ waterfalls, like Pailón del Diablo and those along Ruta de las Cascadas, are at their most powerful. Along the coastline, early March remains a good time for surfing and fishing trips.

Depending on the year, Easter (Semana Santa) may fall in late March, with the most spectacular event during Holy Week being the procession of Jesús del Gran Poder in Quito.

Visiting Ecuador in April

low season

In the highlands, continue to expect heavy afternoon showers in April, with temperatures around 18°C in Quito and slightly warmer in lower valleys. The coast begins to dry out by mid-month, with cooler temperatures and overcast skies. The Amazon sees temperatures around 30°C and high humidity.

For those wondering when to visit Ecuador for wildlife sightings, April is definitely worth considering. The country’s landscapes provide a stunning backdrop for wildlife encounters. Cloud forests like Mindo and Intag burst into bloom with orchids and bromeliads, creating the perfect habitat for birds such as the Andean cock-of-the-rock. In the Amazon, wildlife thrives in the wetter conditions, with canoeing and piranha fishing offering up-close encounters.

Visiting Ecuador in June

high season

June heralds the start of Ecuador’s dry season, with clear skies and minimal rainfall in the Andean Highlands. The Pacific Coast experiences cooler weather with overcast skies and temperatures around 27°C. In the Amazon, rainfall slightly decreases and rivers begin to recede.

This is the best time of year to go to Ecuador to catch the beginning of the whale-watching season, whilst lower water levels in the Amazon make wildlife viewing and jungle treks more accessible. The clear weather also makes it a perfect period for trekking, climbing and biking in the highlands.

Visiting Ecuador in July

high season

July promises excellent weather conditions across Ecuador. The Andean Highlands see clear skies and minimal rainfall, with temperatures averaging 18°C. The Pacific Coast remains cool, cloudy and dry, with temperatures around 25°C. The Amazon experiences a drier period, making it ideal for visiting with fewer rainy days and lower humidity.

July is perfect for outdoor activities like trekking, climbing and multi-day hikes such as the Trans-Zuleta trek and the Inca Trail. Humpback whales are passing along the coastline, making it an ideal time for whale watching, whilst Isla de la Plata is great for surfing and diving. In the Amazon, lower water levels make wildlife spotting easier as animals gather around the rivers.

Visiting Ecuador in August

high season

The dry season prevails in August, with the Andean Highlands enjoying clear skies, minimal rain and average highs of 20°C. The Pacific Coast is overcast with temperatures around 24°C, whilst the Amazon sees fewer rainy days, though thunderstorms are still possible.

Like July, August is well suited to climbing and trekking. Just a short drive from Quito, the lesser-known El Ángel Reserve is home to a thousand-year-old grove of native Polylepis trees. Humpback whales gather on the Pacific Coast for their mating season, making August one of the best times to go to Ecuador for whale watching.

Visiting Ecuador in September

medium season

The Andean Highlands remain sunny in September, with temperatures around 20°C. The Pacific Coast stays cool and dry, with overcast skies and mild temperatures. The Amazon experiences its driest period with low rainfall and lower water levels, though humidity remains high.

Head to Otavalo, home to a weekly indigenous handicrafts market, for the Yamor Festival this month. Locals celebrate the corn harvest with music, dancing, parades and fireworks, as well as the eponymous Chicha del Yamor – a drink brewed using seven different varieties of corn. In the Amazon, the dry conditions make for excellent jungle treks, with easier access to trails and a higher chance of spotting animals.

Visiting Ecuador in October

medium season

October marks the transition from the dry to the rainy season in Ecuador, particularly in the highlands. The Pacific Coast sees temperatures rise, especially in the north as the Humboldt current weakens. The weather is still reasonably dry in the Amazon, though road conditions in remote areas may be slippery as the first rains start to arrive.

Visitors to Guayaquil can expect a lively atmosphere with street parties and fireworks on 9th October to celebrate the coastal city’s Independence Day. Elsewhere, the Amazon is an ideal destination for spotting nesting birds and crocodiles at national parks such as the Cuyabeno Reserve. Lower water levels before the rainy season intensifies mean trails are still accessible during October.

Visiting Ecuador in November

medium season

By November, the rainy season is in full swing in Ecuador, with the highlands and the Amazon especially wet. In the Andes, expect mild temperatures and sunny mornings followed by afternoon showers. The coast warms to 30°C, with more sun by month’s end.

Culturally, November is a vibrant time thanks to Cuenca’s Independence Day celebrations and the nationwide Dia de los Difuntos (Day of the Deceased). The latter is the most well known of the festivities, and a time for families to reconnect with their ancestors as well as reflect on their roots. Animal lovers can head to the coast for the beginning of the sea turtle nesting season, where quieter beaches await thanks to the intermittent rain showers.

In the Amazon, rainfall continues, though it’s slightly less intense than in previous months, with temperatures staying around 30°C.

December is the best time to visit Ecuador for surfers, with optimal conditions along the Pacific Coast. It’s also a great time to experience Ecuadorian Christmas celebrations, from street parades to traditional buñuelos (deep-fried doughnuts) to vibrant markets offering local handicrafts. Make the most of the less windy weather along the Avenue of the Volcanoes and embrace the challenge of summiting the active Cotopaxi, second tallest volcano in Ecuador.
