Tailor-Made Holiday

Best of Malaysian Borneo

Explore the state of Sabah from Danum Valley to Sepilok and Kota Kinabalu

14 days

from £2,995pp (excluding flights)

This two-week holiday to Malaysian Borneo includes wildlife encounters, tropical jungles, mountains and idyllic beaches.

  • Explore pristine rainforest from the canopy walkways of Danum Valley
  • Cruise the Kinabatangan River in search of the pygmy elephant, orangutan and proboscis monkey
  • Climb Mount Kinabalu, and watch the sunrise from the highest peak in South East Asia
  • Relax on a secluded stretch of beach

Danum Valley and the Kinabatangan River

After a night in Kota Kinabalu fly east to the small town of Lahad Datu and journey on unmade tracks into Danum Valley and some of Malaysian Borneo’s most pristine rainforest. Spend three days exploring the jungle around your lodge, trekking to lookout points, waterfalls and through the canopies on canopy walkways. This is one of the best areas to see orangutan in the wild as well as a wealth of other wildlife from proboscis monkeys, to pygmy elephants and wonderful bird and insect life.

The Kinabatangan River is another haven for wildlife which allows the chance to see and feel the rainforest from a different perspective, on the river. Cruise in the early morning light and at dusk when wildlife is at its most active and fireflies light up the night.

Orangutans and Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre

If orangutan have eluded you in the wild, Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre offers a wonderful chance to see these animals as they are on their journey through rehabilitation and back into the wild. Fruit is placed on platforms in the rainforest twice daily and released orangutan can return to feed in order to supplement what they cannot find in the wild.

Kota Kinabalu and Mount Kinabalu

The highest peak in South East Asia Mount Kinabalu is located in within the World Heritage Site Kinabalu Park. Although not an easy climb, Mount Kinabalu can be conquered from most and offers a chance to see a variety of flora and fauna over the four climate zones around the mountain, from lowland dipterocarp woodland to coniferous forests and alpine meadow plants.

End your holiday to Malaysian Borneo with a stay at a tropical beachfront retreat surrounded by rainforest.

Best time to visit Malaysian Borneo

Borneo is the perfect family destination during school holidays. The best time to visit is between April and October when the weather is relatively dry, and the seas are at their calmest.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
Sepilok is a reserve of 43 kilometre squared of lowland primary rainforest and mangrove and was made into an Orangutan protection zone in 1964. Orphaned and injured orangutans are brought to Sepilok where the centre facilitates their return to the wild. The Orang-utans are fed twice daily from platforms in the forest, which are reached along raised wooden walkways from the centre. This feeding is just to supplement what they can't find for themselves in the jungle and feedings take place every morning and afternoon.

The climb up to the summit is split over two days, due to the rapid ascent. The trek itself is less than 10 kilometres in length but involves climbing over 3,000 metres. The 'Trail Climb' takes place on the first day, whilst the 'Summit Climb' begins very early the next morning.

Overnight on the mountain in simple accommodation.

After this point the route crosses over bare, windswept granite rock and has some very steep sections.

The summit is a stark, grey rocky expanse of windswept granite. Having reached the summit by sunrise there will be ample opportunity to take photographs. Descend back to Timpohon Gate via Low's Peak in time for a well-earned breakfast. Your driver will be waiting for your onward transfer.
