Taking its name from the river over which the camp looks, Sand River is a classic, East African bush camp. The open, canvas rooms get the balance just right between safari chic and colonial antique furnishings, with the rugs, cushions, four-poster beds and writing desks providing a subtle glamour of bygone safaris.
The views are excellent from all tents, spread out as they are along the banks of the river itself, which is often filled with hippos, the trees along the banks offering shade as well as privacy.
The main mess tent also makes use of the camp’s great position, with endless views across the plains in most directions, best enjoyed relaxing in one of the large leather chairs with a drink in hand or enjoying a game of pool in the billiards tent, next to the small but refreshing pool.
This particular part of the Mara is renowned for its rich diversity of wildlife, tucked away from the crowds, and close to the Tanzanian border so remains very popular.
The atmosphere and location of Sand River Mara set it apart from many of its peers. The endless plains of the Mara combined with the river setting add drama, while its proximity to the Tanzanian border means you can use the telescopes dotted around camp to spot wildlife in the Serengeti – two countries from one camp.
