Where to stay

Below you can see some of the wonderful places we have recommended for this journey.

Shali Lodge £££££

  • Egypt
  • Unusual

Located just a few minutes’ walk from the main square of Siwa town, Shali Lodge is reached along a charming palm-covered dirt road. The lodge has been built using rock salt, to create a truly traditional accommodation in the heart of Egypt’s the Western Desert. The rooms are simple but elegant, furnished with palm frond chairs & beds made from local salt! The Shali Lodge restaurant offers wonderful, traditional food which can be enjoyed on the candle-lit roof terrace, shaded by date palms or on brightly coloured cushions around the open fire in the lounge.

Albabenshal Heritage Lodge £££££

  • Egypt
  • Unusual

Albabenshal Heritage Lodge sits amidst the jagged ruins of Old Shali, a 13th-century citadel in the centre of Siwa. The construction of the village ecolodge began with ancient, dilapidated Siwan homes that were renovated using traditional kershef, a mixture of sun-dried salt, mud and sand. Albabenshal currently offers 11 guest rooms on three levels, connected through a network of alleyways and terraces that look over central Shali and the palm groves beyond. Inside, guest rooms are furnished and decorated in authentic Siwan style, with colourful Bedouin carpets, palm frond chairs, tables and beds, and linens of fine Egyptian cotton embroidered by women of the oasis. On the main terrace, the Albabenshal Restaurant serves a diverse offering of Siwan dishes.

Adrere Amellal Lodge £££££

  • Egypt
  • Wilderness

Located around 15 minutes drive from the town of Siwa, Adrere Amellal Lodge was built with 100 per cent Siwan labour so that it would fit entirely into the architectural styles of the oasis. During the day sunlight shines through rectangular blocks of semi-transparent salt, brought from nearby salt-water desert lakes, which form the walls of the main restaurant. At night, candlelight turns the salty walls gold. The theme is cultural and natural. The walls of the 34 rooms are adorned with coin-like stones gathered from the desert, Siwan tapestries and carpets. The lodge garden provides organic food for residents. And a natural hot spring, one of 230 in the oasis, serves as a swimming pool.

I really felt like Tom Frost listened and did his very best to meet my demands.  Very soon I was trusting him implicitly and placing a high value on his advice.  I am so glad I did!

Our guide in Cairo was obviously one of the best and did wonders for our knowledge of the ancient history of Egypt.

Thank you so much for assisting us with all of the planning. We wouldn't hesitate to go back to Egypt again. There is so much to see there.
