Laos Highlights Holiday

11 days

from £2,655pp

Magnificent scenery, beautiful temples and a wonderful relaxed atmosphere are a few of the treats in store for any holiday around Laos.

  • Discover Luang Prabang’s old world charm, tranquillity and temples situated on the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers
  • View the town and river at sunset from the temple-topped hill of Phousi
  • An evening at the Night Bazaar, full of handmade textiles and goods created by local and hill tribe people
  • A cruise on the Mekong River stopping at Pak Ou caves and local villages
  • Explore the temples and French colonial houses of the capital city of Vientiane
  • Visit to the studio of Carol Cassidy, who has done much to advance the Lao weaving traditions

Sandwiched between China, Thailand, Vietnam, Burma and Cambodia, there is a marked contrast between the different areas of this unspoilt country but an unmistakable French influence permeates through the architecture, culture and food. Laos is famous for its wonderful textiles, with each area having its own special design and superb quality.

Start in Luang Prabang, the delightful, peaceful, little town situated on the Mekong River surrounded by rich forest. Wander the streets stopping at ornate temples or sit in one of the many cafes and watch the world go by. The little town is a dream and a favourite of everyone who visits and is rightly described as the jewel in Laos' crown. From Luang Prabang, spend time on the Mekong River exploring rural villages and the Pak Ou caves. Fly to the capital Vientiane and discover the French colonial houses and temples built by the Mogul Emperor Ashoka.

It is then possible to drive over the border into Thailand and fly back to Bangkok. For the more adventurous, the hill tribes of Northern Laos offers an exciting opportunity to travel into some rarely visited and very beautiful regions.

Day 2

Fly Bangkok to Luang Prabang

The entire town of Luang Prabang, in landlocked Laos in Southeast Asia, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. An exotic former royal capital, it nestles in a peaceful valley on the edge of the Mekong River and represents Laos' spiritual heart and principle showpiece. It is a haven for nature and history enthusiasts.

Day 3

Spend the Day Visiting Temples and the National Museum
Explore Luang Prabang's impressive selection of temples, including Wat Mai, Wat Wisunarat and Wat Xieng Thong.

One of the most celebrated religious structures in Laos, the 16th century Wat Xieng Thong is the quintessential Luang Prabang temple; it's graceful sweeping roof stretches almost to the floor and a unique 'tree of life' mosaic decorates its western wall. The temple is one of the few to not have been destroyed by successive invaders.

Afterwards visit the national museum, housed in Luang Prabang's former Royal Palace. Mixing traditional Lao and French architectural styles, this colonial building houses an array of historic and religious artefacts.

Finish by exploring the narrow alleys that crisscross the town, and stop to enjoy views over the Mekong River.

Day 4

Day on the Mekong River
Spend a day cruising the Mekong River, known as the 'heart and soul' of South East Asia. Travel along this economic lifeline in order to visit remote and interesting areas, including a stop at a traditional silk-weaving village.

Also visit the spectacular Pak Ou Caves, cut into a sheer limestone cliff face beside the river. These sacred grottos are packed with hundreds of small Buddha statues.

Varying in design and size, these figures were taken here and hidden as part of New Year celebrations. Pilgrims have since added their own offerings and caves are now overflowing with idols.

We pick you up at Pakse airport or hotel in town. At boarding this afternoon (Check-in is at 12noon), your ever-friendly Laotian crew welcomes you with a cocktail. You will start your cruise experience with the departure southwards. When the sun has set and your cruise vessel is moored safely at the river shore you will get to know more about Laos and its people as well as the nearly 5,000 km long Mekong river during exciting presentations and lectures held by your cruise director. Day 7

Unesco-World Heritage & Nature Delights
After cruising leisurely further downriver you will stop to go on a shore excursion to the impressive temple complex of Wat Phou, relics of the great Khmer empire reining the region from the 8th to 13th century. This UNESCO World Heritage site is located at the foot of the 1,500 m high Kao Mountain. With its mystical atmosphere these ruins are among the most inspiring archaeological tour destinations of Laos. Returning aboard your can lean back and enjoy the beautiful sunsets from your cabin or the sundeck while cruising deeper into the so called region of the 4,000 Islands. (B/L/D)

Day 8

The 4000 Islands
Here in the deep south of the country the Mekong has its widest expansion of up to 16 km during the annual high water period. In thousands of years nature created a landscape that seems almost surreal with thousands of islands appearing in the river bed when the high water declines annually. Some of these islands are bigger with a magnitude of a few square kilometers; other uninhabited ones are only a few square meters wide. Today you will go on an excursion partly by river cruise, local slow boat and bus to explore this remote nature escape and you will also see the mighty Khone waterfalls, the biggest falls in Asia. Lunch is served in a local restaurant. In the evening enjoy our farewell dinner aboard. (B/L/D)

Day 9

Return to Pakse
Breakfast is served in the morning, before you disembark for your return to Pakse by bus. (No flights earlier than 11:30 from Pakse or 14:30 from Ubon Ratchathani will be reached. If you plan an earlier flight, we’ll be happy to arrange an extra hotel night in Pakse to your itinerary to leave the next morning.)* (B/-/-)

Fly Pakse to Vientiane

Standing on the banks of the Mekong River, the charming city of Vientiane is the capital of Laos. Blending classic Buddhist serenity with a soupçon of French flavour, Vientiane is a small, laid-back city packed with things to see and do.

Discover Vientiane
Visit the That Luang Stupa built in 1566, the most impressive Stupa in Vientiane, which has a central stone structure over 30m high and the Anousavari Monument dedicated to those who died before the revolution. It is in fact incomplete but has a wonderfully detailed painted ceiling. Visit Wat Sisaket, the oldest wat which has a number of unique features including the cloister, the frescoes inside the Sim and an estimated 6,840 images of Buddha. Wat Phra Keo, the former temple of the Lao monarchy, has been converted into a museum showing the history of the Lao Buddhists through the years and stand next to the well manicured gardens of the former Presidential Palace. The main market is worth a visit as is a walk along the riverbank.
