Best of Zimbabwe

Explore this beautiful and diverse country that is rich with its history, wildlife and varied landscapes. Matobo is situated in the southern part of the country. It forms the core of the Matopos Hills, an area of granite kopjes and wooded valleys. Mana Pools is located on the southern bank of the Zambezi in the northern part of the country.

This itinerary offers you a rich diversity of culture, wildlife and adventure. Matobo National Park include the Matopos Hills which as the sacred ground for the Ndebele tribe has an immense amount of history and archaeological sites. The park is also home to the black rhino and white rhino and good populations of the rare black eagle.

Hwange National Park, the largest park in Zimbabwe has a good mix of different veld and landscape types means that game viewing is always productive all year round. Hwange has one of the largest surviving groups of African wild dogs along with Gonarezhou, Kruger and Selous Game Reserve. Wildlife include lion, large herds of elephant, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyaena, giraffe, sable, blue wildebeest, impala, waterbuck and reedbuck. Game viewing is by 4x4 vehicles and also on foot.

Mana Pools National Park one of those parks where you can game view from a canoe, on foot and by 4X4 vehicle. It is renowned for its large concentration of wildlife especially between April and October. This is the great time because as the internal water pans dry out, the animals tend to all congregate to the permanent waterholes that includes the Zambezi River. Mana Pools means four in the local Shona language. There are four large pools inland from the Zambezi River. These pools usually have water during the dry season.

Victoria Falls brings a totally different experience to the rest of the itinerary. It is well known as Africa’s adventure capital. Activities include white water rafting, canoeing, bungee jumping, river cruises, horse riding, fishing, helicopter flights and crocodile cage diving amidst a number of others available.

Day 4

Day at leisure in Matobo

The Matobo Hills are famous for the unique geological formations of balancing boulders, excellent rhino populations and ancient rock art. Set within an easy drive of Bulawayo, the Matobos offer a complete contrast to your usual savannah safari. This is as much about the scenery and the history, as it is about the wildlife. Cecil Rhodes' grave at World's View is a popular stopping point, with beautiful views across this extraordinary region. These hills have been the spiritual stronghold of the San bush people for centuries and convey an air of spirituality and timelessness.

High up above, circle the highest concentration of black eagles in the world and amongst the rocks are leopards, klipspringer and both black and white rhinos. The landscape and its accompanying fauna are magically different.

Hwange National Park is in the northwest corner of Zimbabwe, on the border with Botswana and, at 14,600 square kilometres, is roughly the size of Belgium. This vast wilderness area of Kalahari sands, grasslands and teak forest is home to one of the highest concentrations of game in Africa, especially elephants - which congregate around the waterholes.

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
