Tailor-Made Holiday

Gonarezhou National Park & Matobo Hills

The place of elephants and castle kopjes

11 days

from £4,495pp (excluding flights)

Combining Gonarezhou National Park with Matobo Hills, this holiday idea explores Zimbabwe’s most wild and iconic places.

  • Take guided game drives in Gonarezhou – the “Place of Elephants” with a population of over 8,000
  • Cruise down the Save River, walk to Chivilila Falls and fish for Tiger Fish
  • Stay at Chilo Gorge, brainchild of renowned conservationist Clive Stockil
  • Photograph the impressive granite domes and castle kopjes of the Matobo Hills

This holiday sets the bar very high, right from the outset with a stay at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge.  Renowned for having one of the best locations in Zimbabwe, Chilo also has impeccable conservation and environmental credentials which is evident in the approach taken by its guides. Chilo’s founder, Clive Stockil, has been at the forefront of community based conservation and tourism for the last 40 years and has employed guides whom are at the top of their game.

They are your passport to the wildlife and pristine wilderness of Gonarezhou, where animals are in their most natural state; do not expect obliging animals posing for photographs as they are pursued by a relentless cavalcade of safari vehicles. The safari experience at Gonarezhou is as authentic as it gets, with big cats, large herds of buffalo, hippo, plains game and a huge population of elephant all being major attractions.

This holiday to Zimbabwe also includes 2 nights under canvas to give travellers access to some of Gonarezhou’s more remote areas. Each spacious A-Frame tent sleeps two guests in camp beds with “en-suite bathroom” consisting of a short drop toilet and bucket shower. Visit the beautiful Chilojo Cliffs and fall asleep listening to the calls of the wild and awaken to the dawn chorus of Gonarezhou National Park.

The climax of this trip is as spectacular as the beginning, staying at the unique Camp Amalinda in the Matobo Hills. A stay here is a must for any safari enthusiast looking for more than just a wildlife experience. Steppes can arrange for archaeologist and historian, Paul Hubbard, to guide clients in the Matobo area, giving insight into the rich history and ethnology of Zimbabwe. Depending on fitness levels walking may be in the form of a gentle trek to visit nearby San rock art sites or a more challenging full day hike to Nanke Cave.

Tracking both white and black rhino on foot in the company of a professional guide is a memorable and rewarding wildlife experience. Drive through the park, following the footsteps of Cecil John Rhodes and King Mzilikaze, chief of the Matabele, before visiting Rhodes final resting place atop 'View of the World'; a fitting end to a remarkable Zimbabwe safari.

The Matobo Hills are famous for the unique geological formations of balancing boulders, excellent rhino populations and ancient rock art. Set within an easy drive of Bulawayo, the Matobos offer a complete contrast to your usual savannah safari. This is as much about the scenery and the history, as it is about the wildlife. Cecil Rhodes' grave at World's View is a popular stopping point, with beautiful views across this extraordinary region. These hills have been the spiritual stronghold of the San bush people for centuries and convey an air of spirituality and timelessness.

High up above, circle the highest concentration of black eagles in the world and amongst the rocks are leopards, klipspringer and both black and white rhinos. The landscape and its accompanying fauna are magically different.

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
